Twitter's Diversity Numbers And The Mystery Of Black Twitter
Forbes ^ | 7/24/2014 | Tim Worstall

I find myself getting very confused in this ongoing series of arguments and revelations about how white and male Silicon Valley seems to be. Companies are being castigated, castigating themselves even, for things that aren’t really under their control. Perhaps it’s simply because I’m not American and therefore am observing a culture different than my own. But then I see the arguments being made about “Black Twitter TWTR +2.38%” and find myself not just confused but perplexed. For the evidence being offered is the very refutation of the contention being made. This isn’t a cultural matter, this is a logical error.

The latest installment of this is Twitter releasing their workforce diversity numbers:

"We are keenly aware that Twitter is part of an industry that is marked by dramatic imbalances in diversity — and we are no exception.

"By becoming more transparent with our employee data, open in dialogue throughout the company and rigorous in our recruiting, hiring and promotion practices, we are making diversity an important business issue for ourselves." [...]

"There’s no particular reason, even in theory, to think that a workforce must match the customer base. The potato farmers of Idaho are, I’m reasonably certain, distressingly pallid in appearance but no one is going around insisting that the French fry industry is going to collapse unless diversity increases there."

according to this page, http://www.math.buffalo.edu/mad/computer-science/cs-peeps.html

only .25% of computer programmers are black. That might be part of the reason.

only .25% of computer programmers are black.

The solution is obvious: Twitter should be maintained and upgraded not by programmers but by rappers.

Careful you don’t give “somebody” any ideas!

Think about what happened to the white farmers in Zimbabwe!

Would help if blacks stopped accusing their ethnic peers of “acting white” whenever one veers too far from “black culture.”

The article did mention something else interesting, that engineers (and males) are more likely to have autistic qualities. I wonder if blacks are less susceptible to autism and if so to what degree?

Apparently the same ratio but black children are more likely to be diagnosed years later than white. Dunno if that means anything.

Our educators need to explain why there aren’t many black and hispanic kids graduating with tech skills...
Why?

I’m beyond certain that student personal responsibility plays absolutely no role.

Therefore the only possible explanation is the heavy jackboot of white society on the minorities’ necks.

The tech marketplace is extremely unforgiving.

Products that don’t work are quickly abandoned, and the companies that produce said products get a bad name equally as quickly and are shunned.

As such, most tech companies require employees that can actually do something, which leaves out a lot of the sexual/racial grievance and transgendered Aleutian folk dance majors.

What kind of vile racists insist on pointing out that certain groups haven’t managed to keep up. So hateful. And racist. Did I mention racist?

Idaho potato farmers? lol What about those dairy farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota? Mostly Germans, Dutch, and Scandinavians - very, very white.

Seriously, when I was in high school (in the 1950’s), it was mandatory for at least 2 years of math. Then in the 3rd and 4th years, you could choose to take advanced math classes. As soon as we reached the junior year, the gender imbalance kicked in and it was about 2:1 male vs female. I suspect it was 2 reasons: a lot of the gals thought math was hard and why bother because they would not need math if they got married, & perhaps it was actually not a subject they liked - maybe boys really were better at math?

I have one niece who is/was a wizz at math, and now when she is older, she is still obviously just a tad above her sisters and cousins in most subjects. She is not only very bright, but she is super confident. Her three sons are all into engineering fields.

Why is it that no one actually put into print another area of racial inequality - the NBA!!! NFL???

I’m not for all the hand-wringing about the far greater numbers of men than women in the tech world, but to chalk it up to women not having the aptitude for it is stupid and insulting. But do they nearly as often have an interest in it? No.

Meanwhile, where there is substantial evidence that aptitude is involved, the differing numbers by race, this writer manages to miss again—bypassing aptitude and explaining it away by quality of schools. (Though yes, I expect there is some of that involved.)

On his larger point, I do believe he is correct.
