An anaconda snake is loose in New Jersey's Lake Hopatcong, and a local reptile expert said Friday he's breaking his silence after animal control told him to keep quiet about the dangerous reptile. "I've known it was an anaconda since last week, but I was told by animal control and state police not to say anything," Gerald Andrejcak, who works for Common Sense for Animals, told The New Jersey Herald. "Officials were afraid that if it came out that the snake was an anaconda it would cause mass hysteria. It needed to come out, it is a public safety issue."

No doubt they are collectors items.
But recall the havoc they caused on the battlefield.
Our tanks were pea shooters in comparison. Shells fired at them would bounce right off. And they could take out opposing tanks over a mile away.
As someone that keeps snakes as pets, you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Not to mention that most of the animals being released at the moment appear to be in states where legislation is pending for banning pets. There is evidence that PETA and the HSUS sympathizers have been the ones releasing these animals.
I question there being an anaconda in that lake at all for several reasons. 1. They’re outlawed in NJ. 2. An anaconda will not survive once the temperature drops below 50.
Also, big snakes are not expensive to feed. considering they eat once a month or so. The “too expensive to feed” BS comes from ignorant PETA morons that have no idea what they are talking about.
Average monthly cost for feeding an 18 foot reticulated python is about $25-$35.
So, please keep your insults and ignorance to yourself.
“An anaconda is an apex predator which could easily escape an enclosure and threaten just about anything it comes into contact with.”
Sounds like a great reality show.
You are exactly right.
It amazes me that the self-same conservatives who howl like scalded cats when anybody merely mentions “gun ban” sit cheerfully by when “animal bans” are discussed.
They only defend the freedoms *they* like or want.
[just like liberals]
These bans are madness.
The one currently being decided in WV is the mother of all draconian pet pogroms.
Not just the usual ‘lions, tigers and bears’ are on the list.
It’s also hamsters, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, etc.

Unaccompanied minor?
You don’t need to watch a reality show. You can watch channels such as Nat Geo and Animal Planet or simply go to the library or online to find out how big and dangerous anacondas can be.
As the father of young child, and the owner of several pets, I certainly would not want to have an anaconda living next door to me or any where near my neighborhood.
“An anaconda is an apex predator. It can grow almost 30 feet long with a width as large as an adult humans waist.”
Um. Nope. Anacondas rarely get over 18 feet and the longest is about 21 feet. They’re a very heavy bodied snake and are most comfortable in the water. they are capable of taking large meals and in rare instances can eat a person, they routinely shy away from people. The Green Anaconda is the heaviest of all snake species and can exceed 500 pounds. Whereas the Reticulated python, the longest snake species in the world can reach 23+ feet but rarely top 300 pounds.
If there really is an anaconda in that lake, it’s used to human contact as it has lived in captivity. It will not view people as food but as a source of food. With that being said, anyone not familiar with the giants should steer clear. If the snake feels threatened, it can defend itself very competently. Being that it is most likely used to people, capturing it shouldn’t be overly stressful or dangerous if it’s done right.
I really wish people that don’t know a lot about snakes would quit posting their “facts” that are not true. Sheesh.
Holy crap. A snake (ANY snake) anywhere NEAR that size on my property would be 'introduced' to a 12 gage shotgun, and possibly a .357 magnum, in very short order.
If it can swallow a deer it can swallow a person.
The second you add exceptions to your right, you have effectively created a loophole to lose that right.
Think that’s “simplistic”?
We have the right to keep and bear arms.*
*Unless it has “too many bullets”, it’s black, the stock is shaped a certain way, the barrel is “too long”, etc, etc, etc.
No one should have such weapons as personal arms.
Should they?
Yes, it is PETA driven. The Gaboon viper shed found in the carolina’s turns out to have been sold on line by a breeder. The person that bought it was associated with HSUS and planted the shed to justify the pet ban bill being discussed there now.
It’s like the “hunter” that saw an african lion here in WV. No sign or trace of the animal has been seen EVER except this one guy that claimed to be hunting.
I have a collection of snakes that range from garter snakes to retics. I also have dogs. Dogs are far more dangerous than ANY pet snakes. The fatality rate in the US by pet reptiles is less than one half of one person per year. Compare that to dozens upon dozens of deaths by dogs per year.
There is a mountain lion and cub in the area of the Lago Vista Middle School / High School too. That means there has to be a male mountain lion as well.
When I was a park ranger until the end of June, I heard some hair raising growls at night near a POA building on Boggy Ford.
Apex predator control means swallowing your target...
“A little simplistic.
We all believe in the right to bear arms around here.
But do you have a right to keep a Tiger Tank in your garage or a nuclear warhead in your basement?
An anaconda is an apex predator which could easily escape an enclosure and threaten just about anything it comes into contact with.
No one should keep such animals as pets.”
Then the same needs to be applied to cats and dogs. Both of which are far more dangerous to people than any pet snakes.
And it’s shameful that you’d use the anti’s stance on firearms in this discussion.
There is new legislation pending in NJ as well. Amazing that no one that has seen the snake has gotten a photo of it. I’m still calling BS on it until I see a photograph.
A huge honkin' one had the chance to put J-Lo and Ice Cube out of our misery and couldn't seal the deal.
Color me unimpressed.
It came thru Mexico not Canada, no checking coming thru Mexico, probably has kin somewhere up here. < /sarcasm>
Your statistic is meaningless. There are many times more per dogs in this country than pet snakes.
You cannot compare the relative danger of the two animals unless you compare human fatalities per snake with human fatalities per dog.
Well, now.
How conveniently coincidental is *that*?
:-\
Given that we’ve broken the 1888 record for ‘coldest July’. that NJ ectotherm should be swimming plenty slow enough for a nice, clear photo.
