An anaconda snake is loose in New Jersey's Lake Hopatcong, and a local reptile expert said Friday he's breaking his silence after animal control told him to keep quiet about the dangerous reptile. "I've known it was an anaconda since last week, but I was told by animal control and state police not to say anything," Gerald Andrejcak, who works for Common Sense for Animals, told The New Jersey Herald. "Officials were afraid that if it came out that the snake was an anaconda it would cause mass hysteria. It needed to come out, it is a public safety issue."

You totally wasted a really good joke.
:-\
It *always* is.
Most here recall the Adventures of Alice, who ran loose in my walls for 3 weeks.
I *thought* keyed locks were enough security.
Now I have keyed locks that cannot be manipulated from the inside of their houses.
As far as dumping pets is concerned, *if*, for some crazy reason, I could no longer care for them myself and could not find anyone else to do it, to my obsessive satisfaction, I think I would ‘end’ the snake rather than abandon it to an uncertain and likely cruel fate.
Two votes. One for Ann Aconda and another for Anna Conda. The stoopid ones will never figure it out before it is too late.
Did they not consider it was just a “normal” breeding ball that would later disperse or had it been going on for a very long time?
People here kill snakes so wantonly, out of fear, that we have massive rodent problems.
Well, most snakes have very little mind at all. Most people who keep snakes, like me, are smart enough to know a 6 foot anaconda can rapidly become a 12 or 15 foot one. Unless you have a leather factory that is a bad investment. Besides they are ugly and have bad tempers.
I have actually gotten snail mail addressed to Sal A Mander and Sal Amander.
Even had phone calls asking to speak to “Sal A Mander.”
I could have voted thrice.
:)
*This* is the sadly funny reality of snake keepers:
this snake would not still be a problem were he in Texas......
I contacted the coroner on that case and explained how constrictors kill and what happens. After I got off the phone with him, he contacted a few other herpers I know and suddenly, the story went dark and the murder angle was the last thing I heard.
I figure they do know how to use one, the problem in NJ is buying one from what I gather.
Yes, I did on such a serious subject.
Yeah.
Funny, that.
“I guess the biggest problem is irresponsible pet owners.
I have seen several programs on TV (Nat Geo, Animal Planet) that say this has become a major problem in South Florida where a number of pet owners have released giant African Rock Pythons and Burmese Pythons into the wild (often the Everglades) because the snakes got too large for them to care for.”
Again, this is media BS. The situation in Florida is a result of Hurricane Andrew that destroyed a breeding facility and research center. That is why there are invasive snakes there and the real numbers are not nearly what are being reported. What I find amusing is that everyone is so worried about Burmese pythons, when thousands of invasive venomous snakes got out at the same time.
There really isn’t a problem with these snakes. They can’t spread out of south Florida due to climate and temperature fluctuations. The numbers of giant constrictors in Florida are low and they are not breeding like the media claims.
Snakes are cheap to care for. A 20 foot python is less expensive to keep and care for than a miniature poodle is. Yes, snakes can escape their enclosure. They usually stick around close to it because they’re timid animals. They’re not like a dog that gets out of a back yard and strolls down the street right off the bat.
No offense but you need to do some research on snakes that involves people that actually keep snakes and know them, not what the idiot box is force feeding you. You’ll find that most of what you believe about snakes is not reality.
We’re breeding morphs of ball pythons. We’ve got some really nice ones popping out now.
We just had a beautiful litter of 25 Brazilian Rainbow Boas.
I can’t wait to breed the retics!
It had been going on for a very long time. Honestly, I was absolutely stunned by the size of the infestation.
Here's a brief video clip from the episode about it on the Animal Planet show "Infested!" But it doesn't really do the situation justice the way the entire episode did.
Also, there are some other YouTube videos about garter snake home infestations, including this one.
Have you seen Kevin’s new “cookbook” for Beeps?
I almost dropped the $100 on it, just for the photos...:D
Years ago, there were “hundreds” of morphs on World Of Ball Pythons.
I cannot wrap my head around how many there are now, and they just keep coming.
It is a miracle that one little rather plain looking snake holds within itself these unlimited pattern and color possibilities.
As the AGWers say: Warm globally, cool locally!
LOL!
My favorite “show”

Brian is a riot *and* a veritable wellspring of information.
:)
I’m really hoping that the Great Lakes total ice coverage record of 1979 (94%) gets broken this winter.
Brian is great. He’s helped out a few times with questions I’ve had. Love that series.
