I heard footsteps, and they kind of bum-rushed me from behind, he said. And I turned around, and there was a revolver in my face.
Dittrich said he gave the men his wallet with $25 inside, doing exactly what some self-defense experts suggest when confronted with a burglar: Give them what they want.
As he opened the door, Dittrich said, he tried to make as much noise as possible, trying desperately to alert his fiance, Duffy, who was in the bedroom asleep.
But one of the men found Duffy and, pointing the gun at her head, sexually assaulted her, she said. Dittrich, in the other room and unaware of what happening in the bedroom, said he kept trying to make as much noise as possible in hopes of waking up his neighbors.
But when Dittrich grabbed the gun, the burglars attacked him, he said. As her fiance was beaten in front of her, Duffy was able to call for help.
In the end, the attackers fled, but not before breaking Dittrich nose, both cheekbones, and the bones around one of his eye sockets.
They feel safer in Ohio, they said, adding that their experience drastically changed them and their views on a number of issues, including gun control. Before, both didnt feel the need to own a gun. Now, they are proud gun owners and keep a handgun in the bedroom.
I didnt want a gun. I specifically didnt want one, Dittrich said. I was very much opposed to hav[ing] one, and I guess I got the realization that the police really cant protect you. They can respond, and they can protect you once they get there. But, youre on your own.

It is sad that so many people are deceived into thinking that police are like superheroes swooping down on criminals stopping them from committing crimes. Like most stories involving encounters with violent criminals, the police are not there when the attack occurs and victims have to act to save themselves.
The so-called "self-defense experts" mentioned in this story are gun control supporters that preach just submitting to criminals as if that is self-defense. As we see from this story, submitting to the criminals gave them the upper hand placing them firmly in control of the situation.
Another liberal, awakened to reality. Unfortunately a little late.
They feel safer in Ohio?
Where did they live when this happened?
As they say....
When seconds count, the police are minutes away.
East Orange, New Jersey,
Poor situational awareness on his part. They followed him in from outside.
East Orange, NJ.
A white couple in East Orange, NJ.
You couldn’t find many places in Ohio that would feel less safe than East Orange, NJ.
“East Orange, New Jersey,”
Damn Amish again.
Only reason I own a weapon is to protect my dog from the cops.
i carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.
The penalty for home invasion must be death. No exceptions. If the homeowner doesn’t apply the penalty, then the state MUST.
Not just a white couple in East Orange, NJ...
He was walking his dog at 12:30 a.m., according to the story I saw last night.
Past midnight...walking the dog in East Orange, NJ.
These seem like nice enough people....but something about our quest to find no fault in certain people has produced a group naivete....to a dangerous degree.
New Jersey

I am not sure how anyone could ever argue against that. In fact, letting these people back out on the streets is akin to murder.

Slain student called 911, but no one came in time
Police did not respond to her call for help for 48 minutes
I think too many people have seen the cop shows with the “in the nick of time” plot where the cops shoot the baddie(s) before they can kill the innocent victim. the only time that probably happens is in the stand-off situations where the police have time to set up a sniper. The truth I would bet is that unless a person is prepared i.e. armed, they are probalby at the mercy of the attacker who almost always has the element of surprise.
