A Malaysian passenger plane with 295 people on board has been shot down as it flew above eastern Ukraine, according to aviation sources.
The plane, which is believed to have been flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported.
The Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said.
he adviser said the 280 passengers and 15 crew members who were on the plane are all believed to have died.
A spokesman for Malaysian Airlines confirmed it had lost contact with flight MH17, which departed from Amsterdam at 12.14am local time.
The flight disappeared from radar as it flew over Ukrainian airspace, he said.
Sky's Katie Stallard, in Moscow, said media reports suggest the plane came down in the Donetsk region, where there has been recent heavy fighting amid continuing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
Several videos apparently filmed in the area, none of which Sky News has been able to independently verify, show plumes of thick, black smoke rising high into the air.
An aviation source told the Reuters news agency the wreckage of a burning aircraft had been found on the ground.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of reports and are urgently working to establish what has happened."

And we believe this information because...? More likely a Russian air to air "OOPS".
There is a report out of Italy saying it was air to air. Early reports are wrong more often than right, but who knows?
Why does the small device on top look like it’s smiling?
Interfax is saying Putin’s plane crossed the route of the crashed Malaysian plane near Warsaw.
Mistaken Identity?
And the Pentagon now says the rebels do not have an operable BUK system.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Monday the Obama administrations foreign policies in a number of areas have enhanced the worlds tranquility a word that raised eyebrows as reporters pointed to situations in Gaza, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine and the South China Sea.
Would be interesting if it turned out this aircraft was NOT shotdown but that Boeing has a problem with their 777’s suddenly dropping out of the sky and crashing (MH-370 too?).
Remind me never fly a Boeing 777, if that’s the case. Wonder who has them?
Oh yes, I can feel the tranquility...
Serenity now!!
I've heard of successful GPS spoofing responsible for throwing ship navigation way out of charted course. Who knows, maybe there is a way to spoof airliner's identification transponder. Or to rig it onboard.
Maybe MH17 is cat and mouse game on the highest level, something like KAL 007.
Out of all airline carriers, having MA again in the spotlight make it highly suspect for me.
Pilots say that Boeing 777 is one of the best if not the best among all commercial airliners flying today.
I wonder if B777 can be flied remotely.
Yes, it can. I was told that by a recently retired commercial pilot licensed to fly the B777.
Trial run. Coming soon to an airport near you. Prolly not tomorrow, but soon.
This is gonna all come crashing down. The folks that allowed the ragheads to get these missiles should do hard time for a long time. That includes nobama.
When it’s discovered that these missiles are being smuggled over our southern border, don’t count on me to be surprised.
You saw that too? - creepy stuff
Just heard on way to town 7-17 was also date of 800 plane crash. Either a lot of coincidences or planning
Just a few minutes ago, Anderson Cooper stated that TWA 800 was SHOT DOWN! Yep he said it. Perhaps a little slip of the tongue? We know that plane was shot down just like this Malaysian plane was.
Surface to air missiles leave thermal signature and American spy satellites would spot it right away if SAM was fired in this high tension region. Seems it was not. Unlike TWA 008.
What else might happen:
it was shot by air to air missile - either from Ukrainian or from Russian airspace.
Remote controlled to crash - a role originally assigned to MH370 but never played out.
Towelheads lost control of hijacked plane due to passengers pulling Todd Beamer on them (United 93)
Well, there's a lot of human history that has to fit somewhere in a cycle of 365 days. This one I think coincidence.
It's ok, Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize.
Update from Buzzfeed. Even the terrorists sound surprised that they shot down a passenger plane:
English translation of the conversation intercepted by SBU. Kyiv Posts Chris Miller reports that the conversation is between Igor Bezler, a Russian military intelligence officer and a leading commander of the Donetsk Peoples Republic.
Igor Bezler: We have just shot down a plane. Group Minera. It fell down beyond Yenakievo.
Vasili Geranin: Pilots. Where are the pilots?
IB: Gone to search for and photograph the plane. Its smoking.
VG: How many minutes ago?
IB: About 30 minutes ago.
SBU comment: After examining the site of the plane the terrorists come to the conclusion that they have shot down a civilian plane. The next part of the conversation took place about 40 minutes later.
Major: These are Chernukhin folks show down the plane. From the Chernukhin check point. Those cossacks who are based in Chernukhino.
Grek: Yes, Major.
Major: The plane fell apart in the air. In the area of Petropavlovskaya mine. The first 200 (code word for dead person). We have found the first 200. A Civilian.
Greek: Well, what do you have there?
Major: In short, it was 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft.
Greek: Are many people there?
Major: Holy sh__t! The debris fell right into the yards (of homes).
Greek: What kind of aircraft?
Major: I havent ascertained this. I havent been to the main sight. I am only surveying the scene where the first bodies fell. There are the remains of internal brackets, seats, and bodies.
Greek: Is there anything left of the weapon?
Major: Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.
Greek: Are there documents?
Major: Yes, of one Indonesian student. From a university in Thompson.
