I went to the shooting range last night for the first time in about 2 years. Lot's of fun, and I have to admit, I did pretty well for being so out of practice. But talking with some folks, I heard something that I had not heard before, but they all agreed it was true. I'd like to know if anyone can cite a source for this, as I'd like to use it in a conversation with my sister, who is opposed to gun ownership.
What I heard was that the U.S. has the 3rd highest rate of murder by gun in the world, but if you remove the locations with the strictest gun control, we have the 3rd lowest. That's a powerful statistic. I'd like to be able to use it, if I can find a citation. Can anyone help?
I’ve also read that if you remove a certain “demographic” we’re about the same homicide rate as Sweden.
check John Lott’s website. that’s where I’d start.
John Lott is the best source. You could check his website.
This could very well be from John Lott.I would check with him or scan his book as he actually has all the numbers needed to make that conclusion and he keeps them updated.
If I remember correctly he is on this forum.
Does that include suicides?
Paging Mr. Lott...
Not even close to their highest for gun homicide, the US isn’t even in the top ten. Hondouras, Argentina, Brazil, somolia, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq..
Well, you get the picture. The one spot which the US takes top place is in ownership rates.
I don't know. That's one of the reasons I want to find the original source... so I can answer those kinds of questions.
The irony with my sister's anti-gun position is that her daughter is an FBI agent and her son is former Special Forces, and they both support gun ownership.
Of course, we ALWAYS believe what’s in the newspaper and on the Internet. The media NEVER lie to us or obfuscate the truth, do they?
The go to FReeper about gun statistics is marktwain. This is because a lot of gun statistics are uncertain, deceptive and confusing. Even the FBI has a hard time getting accurate crime stats, for their annual Uniform Crime Report (UCR), because states vary widely in what and how they report.
As an example, Arizona is listed in the top ten for “gun homicides”, but 71% of its homicides are suicides. If you adjust for that, Arizona has one of the lowest per capita murder rates in the US.
Likewise, if you adjust the statistics for race, black Americans far outnumber all other ethnic groups per capita in both murderers *and* victims.
And marktwain is one of those few individuals who has the patience to punch through the confusion to get through to the reality.
This is not helped by the left not only embracing deceptive and contrived data, but continuing to parrot it even when it is shown to be nonsense.
On the plus side, there has been a strong effort to associate “blue states” and their gun control with crime. So what you want should be available.
Ive also read that if you remove a certain demographic were about the same homicide rate as Sweden.
You are exactly right and here are the populations:
USA 317 million
Sweden 5.56 million

Take her to a shooting range and lay the gun on the counter when the range master tells you to commence firing. Just leave it there lone while everybody else fires away. At the end of the session tell her, “see it can’t shoot anyone unless someone pulls the trigger. Tell the range master you are going to do this beforehand. Afterwards teach her how to fire the weapon and have fun shooting at the targets...: )
‘Does that include suicides?’
All gun death numbers put out by the left include suicides.
They do whatever they can to twist the numbers to support their foolish belief that only government approved folks should own guns. If we give up our guns we are committing suicide.
That was awesome! I'm not sure it'll work with my sister, but there are some great numbers in there.
I love the idea, but she'd never go with me. At least not without some preliminary intellectual conversion first.
If you ever do get her there, force yourself to make sure that she has fun and a good time, save the complicated lessons and preaching for later. First, get her hooked on the fun and let her get confident.
I suspect data is also broken down by location, but it may take a little digging to find it in that format.
