NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A truck-stop company owned by Tennessee GOP Gov. Bill Haslam and Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has agreed to pay $92 million in fines for cheating customers out of promised fuel rebates and discounts, federal prosecutors said Monday.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee, Pilot Flying J, the country’s largest diesel retailer, accepts responsibility for the criminal conduct of its employees, including 10 who have pleaded guilty to participating in the scheme, and agrees to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
“The terms of this agreement …demonstrate quite clearly that no corporation, no matter how big, influential, or wealthy is above the law,” said U.S. Attorney Bill Killian.
The agreement, signed Friday by company attorneys, also does not protect any Pilot worker or former worker from future prosecution.
The company issue a statement making clear it will not be prosecuted, provided it follows the terms of the agreement.

So customers lose millions and the only ones compensated for that are lawyers and the government? Geezzzzzzzzz..... What a screwed up “justice system.”

That’s why they call it the “CRIMINAL justice system” — the results are criminal!
Got that right. Boonville, MO case in point. I complained one afternoon after fueling the truck that the mensroom was filthy, out of paper in most stalls and the floor looked like a tornadic aftermath.
The manager’s response. “This is a busy place.” My response.
“Do you have a mop, I’ll start on it right now.” All I got was a glare and a hand gesture pointing to the door.
The Flying J brand is being absorbed by the Pilot brand and they’ll disappear where ever there is duplication of the two fuels stops. They’ll have to do it sooner than later with a $92 million payout.
The largest fleets are probably steaming anyway knowing they were rooked out of their discounts. When this all went down back before I retired I recall the fuel department at my company went into hysteria as they thought Pilot was going to be shuttered. That would have been a calamity as they tried to carve-out discounts at other chains which we shed years ago because they wouldn’t discount deeply enough.

Yeah, and there used to be hundreds of thousands fewer trucks and truck drivers. Those drivers now don’t have the luxury of schmoozing at a truck stop with Flo behind the counter. Hours of service regs wont allow wasting time if you intend on bringing home a paycheck each week.
It’s all about efficiency and keeping them moving.
