RIO DE JANEIRO Mario Goetze volleyed in the winning goal in extra time to give Germany its fourth World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday.
Goetze controlled the ball with his chest and then shot past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the 113th minute.

Even soccer fans and officials agree that settling a game with penalty kicks is not the best, but there is no other satisfactory way. Due to the physical limits of the players being reached at the end of 120 minutes added extra time would be a disaster, thus we settle for penalty kicks. As Winston Churchill said about democracy, it might not be the best system, but it is better than the alternatives.
Nor is there any that Klinsmann dove - Monzon left a cleat gash on Klinsmann's leg.
Monzon is an admitted drug addict, and he was a substitute defenseman - he had no impact on the outcome of the '90 final: Brehme won with an unrelated penalty kick.
Why was the Argentine goal disallowed?
I recall another thread about the political leanings of various sports fans....as I recall the most heavily Democrat were the fans of the WNBA.
It was offside.
Look for a few South American players who miss the cut for their nation’s squad acquire Qatari citizenship before 2022.
I hear that a lot. Change the rules to make it more “interesting” and to make it easier to score goals. So that people who don’t care for the sport can continue not caring about the sport. Such a “conservative” concept. Yet soccer is “socialist.” Go figure.
10-15% is prime time nowadays....
Instead of penalty kicks, I would like to se the number of players reduced every ten minutes in the overtime. If there is no score to breakl a tie by the end of the first ten minutes of over or extra time, each team must take one player off the field. If no tie breaker by the end of the second ten minutes, another player from each team must leave the field, etc. When the game is down to six or seven per side, I guarantee there would be a break in the tie and made in play not penalty kicks.
I’d like to see them have unlimited substitutions, until somebody scores in Extra time.
If the NHL can do it in the playoffs, I don’t see why soccer can’t.
I hate the fact now that so many college football games wind up 56-49, that’s not football. That’s just cruddy defense.
The quality of the athletes is magnificent! Football is a sport that emphasizes physical exertion, self-control and the ability to work with your teammates to score.
Andre Schurrle made a brilliant pass to Mario Goetze who got the job done in an understated fashion. No one on the Argentine side thought to check him and its in those unguarded moments when the critical difference between victory and defeat is brought into view.
A 22 year old young substitute player being in the limelight is special, indeed. Football is full of astonishing surprises. That is surely part of the appeal of the beautiful game and why its the world’s most popular sport.
The Germans have the best football team in the world and this final will be studied for years to come as a textbook example in how to win. Germany embodied stamina, shrewdness, cunning and grace. And its been a truly memorable end to a great tournament.
When it comes to politics, world soccer is probably the most diverse of any sport. You have everyone from Politburo members to Francisco Franco in the rooting sections, and every ideology you could think of. In 78, the right wing Argentine Junta and the leftest urban guerillas went on ceasefire during World Cup.
Offsides. There has to be one opposing player between the attacker and the goal.
The linesman signals the referee whether the rule was followed.
Unlimited subs in extra time would change the game too much for me, too much like the NCAA does in soccer. But it is something to contemplate, maybe try out in some lower level competitions.
I still can’t believe how Germany made Brazil look like The Faeroe Islands in their match. I mean, seriously, if Brazil wanted to throw a match, it wouldn’t look much more obvious than that.
Also the ball has to be played by the attacking team.
A prime example was during the first half, when Kroos almost blew the game with his errant back header, the Argie player was offside, but since a defender touched the ball, it didn’t matter.
