Gun violence is a crisis in public health
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 12 july 2014 | Eugene Kane

When a major American city such as Chicago reports 82 people shot and 14 killed over a violent holiday weekend, it's time to take notice.

Describing some parts of the inner city as "the Wild, Wild West" or "an urban war zone" to make a point about lawlessness just doesn't cut it anymore. It's time to call it what it is: an epidemic of gun violence as deadly as any infectious disease or plague that any health professional can imagine.

When Mallory O'Brien, executive director of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, looks at the levels of gun violence in cities such as Chicago, she sees similarities with Milwaukee in terms of the demographics and the social environments where many of the shootings are located.

According to O'Brien, Milwaukee should consider itself fortunate for having "only" nine shootings and one fatality over the Fourth of July weekend, compared to Chicago's bloody totals. But that didn't alleviate her concerns about the possibility for outbreaks of violence on a grand scale in some communities.

"Anytime you hear about that many shootings, it's shocking," O'Brien said. "It's alarming. That's why we have the public health approach."

The homicide commission collects information and research of detailed incidents involving homicide and non-fatal shootings and other crimes on an individual basis. Even though many media reports tended to fold all incidents of gun violence in Chicago's holiday weekend into one large story of societal dysfunction, that tactic often obscured the various factors involved in such widespread mayhem.

It's time to call it what it is: an epidemic of gun violence as deadly as any infectious disease or plague that any health professional can imagine.

It's as stupid to apply any supposed remedies to Swedish-Wisconsinites in rural Wisconsin as it would be to screen them for sickle cell anemia. But under the guise of political correctness, that's what liberals advocate.

True, disease vector control is key, but it can't help as long as so many deliberately cover their eyes so that they can not see.

--“Gun violence” is a propaganda metric. as, IMHO, "illegal gun"--there are no "illegal" guns, only illegal gun usage--

--incidentally , the Wall Street Journal apparently had an editorial on the subject of black societal disfunction as the root cause of "crime" in urban areas a week or so ago--surprising that there hasn't been more uproar about that---

“Gun violence is a crisis in public health”

Sounds like we need to import more illegal gang bangers from Central America.

We need their expertise’s in how to cure this “health problem”.

From the article “ she sees similarities with Milwaukee in terms of the demographics and the social environments where many of the shootings are located.”

Uh OH ... the author went there.

Indeed, if one objectively analyzes the “vectors” (excellent epidemiology analogy by the way) they can be largely categorized and constrained by geography, culture, age and “race”/”ethnicity”.

But to even suggest that publicly, empirically, is of course “r a c i s t “

Keep in mind please that crime is Hierarchical Counted. If a man kidnaps, rapes, robs, and kills a woman only the murder charge is counted. That leaves 3 additional crimes to be flushed down the toilet, and are not part of stats.

In both these statewide studies only 45% of prison population were studied, so you are going to have to multiply out the actual numbers if you want 100%.

Recidivism
http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=17
These offenders had accumulated 4.1 million arrest charges before their most recent imprisonment and another 744,000 charges within 3 years of release.

Older study, but invaluable info. Probation and Parole: https://www.ncjrs.gov/txtfiles/ppvsp91.txt
Keep in mind the sampling was just 45%, they originally committed 25,900 crimes, when placed early release under ‘community’ supervision for parole and probation they then committed another 74,400 new crimes. That folks adds up to 100,300 crimes, and many times more than in victims. As there are multiple people affected when a child is raped or a person murdered.

This is an older study as there are no newer ones, this gives you a big idea of just how many additional early release of criminals to parole and probation cause.

Democrat public policy and Democrat politicians and cities run by them... that’s the crisis here.

But go ahead, change the subject. The pot-smoking, alphabet-news watching, welfare-supported segment of the population (large and growing) doesn’t want to know the truth anyway.

If somehow you were able to eliminate every gun in Chicago these savages will still be killing each other,...

Actually, it’s a crisis in Liberalism; most of those who commit these crimes are Black/Hispanic gang-bangers.

We agree. The violence itself means nothing to them. Poverty is a business to liberals and gun violence is used to grow the business. Their real goal is control over the people so they can further their aim of “social justice:, i.e., totalitarianism. Their “common sense” solution is the erosion of the Second Amendment—ultimately through a liberal Supreme Court. The fact that people get killed due to their social engineering is of no concern to them. It didn’t bother Stalin or Mao either.

If guns are responsible for shooting people, pens must be responsible for check fraud.

I think you can blame a lot of it on the illicit drug trade which is booming thanks to Obama’s open border philosophy. Heroin addiction can drive a man to extremes. Financial debts owed to drug dealers can also lead to extremes from both the person that owes and the person that is owed. Drugs are destroying our country, not guns.

So 10 years for a child who goes hunting?

If a person can’t be trusted with a gun perhaps they should be in prison or under their parents control if minors.

How many children were killed by abortionists in Chicago over the violent holiday weekend?

The solution isn’t ‘fewer guns’ ... it’s ‘fewer criminals’.

--"We found that up to 70% of the people involved in most shootings aren't even eligible to carry due to age or their criminal record," O'Brien said.--

So the libtards answer is to make more laws that these 70% will still not follow.

Tell me more about these "demographics and the social environments", Mallory.
