During a live Senate hearing this afternoon, Sen. Tom Harkin (D) said that while listening to the testimony about children crossing the border illegally, it sounds to him as though many are saying that the solution to the problem is to round them up and ship them back like cattle, a sentiment with which he strongly disagrees. He said that the children have the right to have their health and dignity protected with Health and Human Services under the law. The hearing was held to request 3.7 billion dollars in supplemental funds to help stem the tide of incoming children as well as to provide the ones who are already here with healthcare and legal representation. Republican commentary during the hearing on the border crisis focused on the question of whether the funding would be enough to help the situation at all, and the need to remove the children from the United States as soon as possible.
Harkin pointed out that HHS is short on funds and that the supplement being discussed will allow the agency to follow the law. The supplement, he said, is critical and that we cant turn our back on these kids because the United States should be dedicated to human rights. Were better than that, he said. Harkin went on to say that it is nonsense that, according to some in the room, the United States is being overrun beyond its capacity to handle the border crisis. He feels that the nation can solve the problem and protect the children by letting them apply for asylum via the law and through due process. The children, he said, deserve advocates who can inform them of their legal rights, and that when he hears round them up and ship them back like cattle from the administration, he strongly disagrees. 25 senators attended the border crisis Senate hearing.
These children are trying to escape basic human rights violations, Harkin said, and further, the border escapees represent the exact type of value system on which the United States was founded. Jeh Johnson from the Department of Homeland Security said that the children are coming across easily because there are many ways for them to get through, such as swimming across the border.
Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D) said that parents have to raise as much as $3,000 to send their children to the United States, and that fact alone proves the imminent danger the children face in their homelands. The violence is so bad that the violence of the journey is less you say were going to send them back. Send them back to what? she asked.
Mulkulski went on to say that the horrors of what happens to the children in their countries of origin is indescribable and that the United States must implement a strategy to deal with this humanitarian concern. She likened the border crisis to a war, saying that the children have been driven out of their homes by violent drug dealers. Attention to the root causes of this crisis has been sorely lacking, she said, and that needs to change before a proper solution can be found. The need is urgent she said, and seemed to agree with Harkin that saying round them up and ship them back like cattle is not an acceptable route to take. The Senate hearing on the border crisis will be suspended until next Thursday.
He doesn't know any such thing!
They were shipped here like cattle, I see nothing wrong with shipping them back the same way.
Give them a box lunch and send them home. I'm sure they came with less.
They came up like cattle and they did it by choice.
I say ‘LET ALL THE REGISTERED DEMOCRATS PAY FOR THIS’. That should stop them.........they usually only say this when it is someone else who has to pay for it.
“He said that the children have the right to have their health and dignity protected with Health and Human Services under the law.”
WHAT ABOUT OUR HEALTH? THOSE “CHILDREN” ARE WALKING TIME BOMBS WITH THEIR DISEASES. I’d say WE, THE CITIZENS, have MORE RIGHT to have OUR HEALTH protected from these ILLEGAL INVADERS!
Not.Our.Problem.
Ship ‘em back Dano.
Perhaps the federal government should relocate about 10,000 of these “nice people” to Harkin’s home state of Iowa.
I’m OK with it.
They’ll get a far safer more comfortable ride home than what they endured to get here.
Criminal Illegal Parasites have NO Rights.......
He could fly them back one at a time in his F-4 Phantom jet from Vietnam...
The kids had no choice — whoever the adult was who put them on that damn train was a f’n criminal.
But the greatest criminals of them all are the presidents of the USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras who conspired together to create this chaos at the expense of young lives.
Sheesh people, wake up!
Only a fraction of them are kids.
We need to get some sort of ad out with these pro-amnesty Senators and real language,
1) These Congress folk want to take care of anyone sneaking into the country.
2) These people don’t want to just take care of their immediate needs, they want amnesty, to take care of them forever.
3) These people are in on a conspiracy to use children as a means to their ends, not to return them to their homes but to keep them as pawns.
4) These people think you’re stupid, that they can use children to make you accept their will.
Let me know what you come up with. I think we should have pictures of everyone pushing for this above pics of drug-runners and terrorists.
Of course, but the liberal blinders allow them to see only the non-existent "rights" of foreign invaders; further, I truly believe they are afflicted with a form of insanity.
OK. Anyone past puberty gets shipped back in cattle cars. Anyone pre-puberty gets a kiss on the forehead by Mooshell and shipped back in Ray Nagin’s Katrina Bus Fleet.
Hell I’d rather give the money to Detroit. Even with the corruption most of it would find its way back into our economy before long.
