In spite of the recent tragedies of toddlers being killed or seriously hurt from being locked in a car, I guess it really isn't all that surprising that police are being extra-vigilant to protect kids from hot cars. Some cases, however, like that of a woman in Connecticut being criminally charged for leaving her daughter in a car, are downright ridiculous.
(emphasis added)
Officers were sent to 60 Middle Street on Tuesday where they said Christina Williams, 30, allegedly left her 11-year-old child inside a vehicle.
Police said the interior temperature of the car was about 85 degrees at the time they got to the scene.
When officers opened the car doors, they said the child was responsive and not in distress, and that the car was not "excessively hot."
Police said the child requested to stay inside of the car while her mother went inside a store, and Williams was located in the store and said the same thing.
The mother is due to appear in court at the end of the month.
While an 11-year-old certainly isn't entirely self-sufficient, they're certainly capable of taking care of themselves and letting themselves in and out of a car if they're about to overheat. Many 11-year-olds babysit, for instance. There's a huge difference between leaving an infant strapped in a car seat alone in a car for an extended period of time and leaving an 11-year-old in a not-overly hot car because she asked to stay there.
Williams isn't the only mother being accused of neglecting her children by leaving them safely in a car. Nickie Milem, a woman from South Carolina, is being charged with cruelty to children after she left her children in a running, air-conditioned vehicle with her sister-in-law while she ran into a grocery store.
Child endangerment is a serious crime--but not one that seems to be committed in these cases. This is the nanny state gone insane.
I don’t know, remember that story about the school girl (I don’t know how old she was, but older than 11 I think, maybe like 14 or so) who got inadvertently locked in the car by her brother at school. He had an early class, she had a later one, it was some old car, I still really don’t understand why she couldn’t get out, or why she didn’t have a cell phone, and I think she died.
I think it happened in CA, out west somewhere anyway. Last year, I think.
Scary stuff!
Not saying the cops were right to charge this woman, but maybe not a bad idea to check up.
My humble opinion, with the 14 yo, OK, without the 14 yo, no good.
If you.ve gone Galton’s, how come you paid your water bill?
Galton’s = Galt
I was locked in car when I was 11, and I died.
And I dont do it
Cars get hot
I don't know, that is I don't know how many of us managed to survive the forties, fifties, and sixties without police pulling all out of cars our parents left us in while the shopped and did errands, quite obviously the one thing that died for sure was common sense and what we are left with is a village full of idiots.
Oh no you didn’t!
“Galtons = Galt”
LOL, I like it, it sounds like an ad for a fancy-schmancy supermarket, like Whole Foods. Maybe a fancy supermarket for conservatives?
Once you’ve gone Galton’s you’ll never go back!
With its specials so hot they smoke like a pistol!
More and more I’m starting to think we’ll have to build our own society within (or without) the current US society.
We’ll definitely need supermarkets!
Pack-N-Pick?
We shoot down high prices every day!
The other day I left my dogs in my car, with the AC running, while I went into a restaurant. A gentleman graciously pointed out to me that my dogs could be harmed by leaving them in the car. I explained to him that my car was running with the AC on then thanked him for having the guts to say something.
I had learned how to drive by then.
In 1949 when I was 12 I went 124 in a flathead rail at the drags.
Destruction of the family
Overtaxation
We had 6 kids in our family. Once my friends were discussing with me how their lives were different from mine because they had a lot of kids in their families
Our family was small
We rode bikes with no helmets, took the town bus into town on Saturdays and made it home for dinner
Our parents left us in the car with an older child in charge, wth the windows open but not for a long shopping trip into the supermarket
A couple of things:
One- kids got killed, drowned, poisoned and had head injuries, electrocuted, stitched, and that s not counting fractures, tears and lacerations
Two- kidnapping did not happen. That is worse for a parent than anything. It didn’t happen
And parents were responsible. If something happened they were ashamed and shamed in the community. People don’t want judgement and discernment, so this is what you have - the government in charge, and tgat means democrats- liberals - the non judgemental ones- not the community. And when the government is in charge, they favor their voters. They’re plenty judgemental just not toward the excuse-needers. And this is what you get.
All of us now are treated like stupid idiots who cannot manage our own lives.
And, lastly, there are not two parents at home. No one is home. Mom is working. Everyone has to shove the baby half asleep into the back of the car to go to day care with strangers all day so the parent emotionally detaches. No one in their righting can face doing that to their kid so they are detached. Disassociated. He gets left in the car forgotten while the parent is at work
Parents leave their kids in the car all the time and in the summer. In Texas
How dare you leave them in the car. What are you a bigot.
Sorry, I forgot what I was supposed to be offended by this week and since I am on Free Republic I feel pretty safe to call someone a bigot as we all must be because we hate the wonderful President.
pay my water bill online as to avoid these racist incidents.
Sorry, child endangerment.
Let’s face it. You are just a bad man.
And probably a racist, or republican. either or thy are the same.
Racist republican like Bull Connor.
>> Zero tolerance is for idiots.
Agreed.
An 11 year old can open the darn car door if needed. A different USA ago when I was about 8 or so kids staying in the car while parent was in store etc was real common. Of course we could roll down the windows and perverts weren’t as brazen and free to do as they please as they are today. Our nation has taken leave of it’s senses.
This is it, a ‘97 BMW:
Looks like it was a “security feature” probably to prevent someone from using a coat hanger to open the door from the inside.
