Schubert: String Trio in B-flat, D. 581

There isn’t a lot of string trio music out there, thanks to the fact that the string quartet with its extra violin provides better scope for composition. Beethoven wrote a few trios while Haydn was writing his quartets, but as soon as Haydn put down his pen, Beethoven published his six string quartets, Opus 18.

Schubert wrote two trios in this key, and this is the latter one. It was written at age 20 while Franz was still teaching in his father’s elementary school. This is not late Schubert where he was writing like a young god, but from his juvenile style. There is a lot of Mozart and Haydn in this music because Schubert had not yet come to terms with Beethoven’s music. The piece is in four movements. It’s sensible music for sensible people.
