Super Typhoon Neoguri, a "once in decades storm," is about to hit the southern Okinawa island chain with heavy rain and powerful winds before making landfall across the entire island of Japan this week.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the system, which is already producing winds up to 150 mph, may develop into an "extremely intense" storm by Tuesday as it moves north.

Yes I hope that every person survives and that the damage is minimal, but sometimes I really think that they are awful because they are always yelling for Americans to get off “their” island.

If that projection map is correct, it will make its major landfall over the Kumamoto area with wind speeds exceeding 100 mph. And the storm will cross into Honshu between Hiroshima and Fukuyama.
The potential for damage from this storm could be enormous and could hurt Japan's economy for months to come.

I was at Yokota, AB when Flo (another CAT 5 storm) struck in 1990. Heavy winds, planes evacuated from the air base to Korea.
Plenty of beer was stocked up in the dorms, and we even packed our cars in real right to try and keep any damage to a minimum.

In general, Okinawans are not anti-American. Just anti-rapist and anti-criminal. Too many of our military people, fueled by alcohol and hormones engage in this type of activity. Even though it is a tiny percentage of our military people on Okinawa, it is a large percentage of the total crime.
Many people in Okinawa work on and provide services to our military bases there. More than a few are married to Americans either now or formerly stationed there.
The United States would be wise to further disperse military bases off Okinawa and in to other, especially rural, areas of Japan where they would be more welcome. The military would also be wise to post the few dredges of the military community elsewhere.

I hope the naval base at Sasebo is empty soon because it looks like they could get a direct hit from a cat 3-4 storm.

I have a feeling that by Friday, this will be a non-event (at least in Tokyo). The JMA is pretty good, so I hope the rest of Japan comes through OK.
