California Flooded With People Tattling on 'Water Wasters'

California's drought is creating a deluge of tattletales, after government officials encouraged residents to snitch on their neighbors for wasting water.

The state declared a drought emergency five months ago, but residents have only cut their water usage by about 5 percent, reports The New York Times, cutting back much less than the 20 percent Gov. Jerry Brown asked for in January.

And since people aren't heeding the warnings from the state, cities in the state are asking residents to report their neighbors for wasting water, and are finding that people are all too willing to tell on each other.

Sacramento has already received 6,000 reports this year, or 20 times more than last year, and proudly posted a comparative photo on Twitter showing its lawns turning from green to gold.

Anyone who says we “need” illegals (like we “need” syphilis) isn’t getting it. Cure the “need” another way!

For example, I believe we could pay, say, double, maybe more, for lettuce and pay the pickers more. Maybe some EBT types would even pick the lettuce.

The savings of not supporting illegals (and some EBTs) with taxes should lower our tax burden, and more than cover the increased cost of the lettuce.

Under DCs Mayor Fente, I’m told there was a sign in the Mayor’s office urging people to report homes in their neighborhood that were vacant. There is a DC law that if your home is vacant for one month you have to register it as vacant or prove it is not with water bills and other bills, or prove you are working on it (permits), trying to sell it, or it is in litigation. If you are stupid enough to register it as vacant rather than get and exemption, then they immediately raise your taxes 6 times. In other words a $5,000 tax bill is immediately raised to $30,000. Mayor Fente’s protogee, Muriel Bowser is likely to be DCs next mayor. I have heard a DC employee whisper to a distressed homeowner that they should just waste water to prove occupancy.

Amen. While not in a rural area, I was in Oceanside, CA when the call came to cut water usage by 20% - or else. Like you, we were already frugal with our usage yet were treated as if we were refilling a swimming pool everyday.

We did the “brick-in-the-toilet” and followed the “If it’s yellow, let it mellow” cutsey slogans. Well, water usage dropped so much, the utilities were losing money, and by law they weren’t allowed to, so rates went up - about that 20% figure.

I think I remember somewhere, when folks economized on toilet flushing, that the sewers kind of dried up/plugged up, due to too much solids.
