Anyone who wants a job...prove they don't smoke or use tobacco...Anne Arundel Medical Center, like a growing number of health systems, universities and other businesses, will require a urine test for nicotine use for all applicants starting next July.

Sounds like discrimination to me. And I think I know just where to perform the urine test too. What’s next? Yearly check up to see if you have any trace residue on your hands from the firing range?

So smokers are now a minority to be discriminated against with impunity. Interesting. I guess smoking cigarettes is a an unhealthy lifestyle choice, but anal sex between men is just fine. Got it.

One trick pony.
Soon enough it will be all the overweights that require a weight test before they are hired.

Nothing new here.
I know of quite a few companies with a pre-employment screening for nicotine.

Well just switch to marijuana then one can get high and relax. I don’t see it singled out.

I can think of a 100 things worse for your health than smoking, yet they don’t scan for that do they? #1 I would think would be “Voting for a foreign born communist Muslim hellbent on destroying the healthcare system of the United states”

A policy such as this enacted by a *health care facility* is,it could be argued,a reasonable one.Ditto employees of schools and nursing homes. But not for most types of employers. However,it’s reasonable for *all* employers to charge employees who smoke more for health insurance, just as it’s reasonable for a life insurance company to charge a higher premium for those who skydive.

How else, besides smoking or chewing, might a person become “positive” for nicotine, detected via a urine test.
Tobacco farmer, cigar roller, janitor (sweeps up butts), and who else?
How about that dreaded ‘second hand smoke’? Will that contaminate the innocent?
What does the test really detect? Nicotine itself, some byproduct of nicotine the body products, .... ?
And what other products may mimic that ‘positive’ nicotine test?
Well, well, well, the Ultimate Authority Wikipedia:
Nicotine (IUPAC nomenclature (S)-3-(1-methylpyrrolidin-2-il) pyridine) is a pyrrolidine alkaloid produced in large quantities in the tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum), but is also found in lower concentrations in other species such as the potato, tomato, and pepper.
So, be sure to not stand downwind from a potato or tomato farmer; don’t pick up that second-hand vapor.

Back about thirty years ago, I was interviewing for a job, was very nervous, but was told I was getting the job. In the conference room where we were meeting, there was an ashtray, complete with ashes, on the table. In my nervous state, I asked if I could light up. (I obviously smoked back then) When they found out I smoked, they rescinded their offer and told me they didn't hire "smokers". Come to find out that it was totally legal to do that.
Just sayin'. This isn't just happening now.

Hint: marijuana use may not be distinguishable from tobacco. So lurch around a bit and look high...you’re covered....maybe.
