Among the rival locations in Chicago for the Obama library and museum, the most majestic one hugs the Lake Michigan shore on the Southeast Side with a stunning view of the Chicago skyline.
More than pretty, the Chicago Lakeside site has vast potential to trigger massive related economic growth and create jobs in an often ignored part of the city. With a presidential library and museum as an anchor, large-scale private investment that otherwise might take a generation to occur could happen in a decade.
“It is the most incredibly beautiful site in the city of Chicago,” developer Dan McCaffery is telling me as we discuss the bid for the library and museum he submitted to the Barack Obama Foundation last month. We’re talking in the suburban Washington office of his Chicago-based firm, where I had an exclusive look at the bid.
McCaffery, in a partnership with U.S. Steel, is offering the foundation free land: a prime location near 79th and the lake, the eastern-most point of the 589-acre Chicago Lakeside project.
These vacant acres were once the home of the razed U.S. Steel South Works, which closed in April 1992. The adjacent neighborhoods are where Obama once worked as a community organizer.
McCaffery uses the circle metaphor in talking about his bid, as in Obama coming full circle, building his presidential library near where he started his career.
The bid book, which includes an iPad loaded with a video about the site, has a steel ring embedded in the blue cover.
That circle is an “O,” of course, for Obama. But the ring also symbolize the steel-making roots of the site, the era when South Works was a mighty economic force, McCaffery reminds me.
That land can once again be part of the Chicago economy...

If it must be built it should go on one of the $1 lots in the nearby Englewood neighborhood.

Excuse me, but what would he put IN this library of his? Has he accomplished anything worthwhile? Would it be a paean to 0bamacare? To the patriating of illegal aliens? To his presiding over the collapse of this once great country and the loss of our borders - of the give-away of 1/3 of the country to Meh-he-co? To the ushering in of sharia law?

One of the neighborhoods bordering on this piece of land is locally known at “The Bush”, so if the US Steel site becomes the Obama memorial, he’ll still be able to blame any trouble there on the Bush.
By the way, just about all the neighborhoods near that site are pretty run down - the part of the “South Chicago” neighborhood bordering the site to the west, Millgate, has pretty much always been a dump; The Bush is (or at least was) mostly trashy; and the approach to the region from the northwest, South Shore Drive, goes through a neighborhood (South Shore) that was a number of decades back mostly middle class Jewish and Irish, but is now full-blown ghetto, with major street crime and routine gun violence as bad as almost anything in Englewood or Lawndale (the worst of the South Side and West Side neighborhoods).
In a lot of ways, it could be a perfect location for an Obama tribute - once the old steel mill site was cleaned up, it would be calm and tranquil at the surface on the lakefront, but a sea of hatred and violence just a couple of blocks in.
Not yet printed but expect a new book called "Everything I love about America" by Mullah Obama. It will be 500 pages of blank pages
Windy City: ideal site.
