It was a revealing convergence Monday when the five-member conservative Supreme Court majority delivered the Hobby Lobby contraception decision even as President Obama announced that House Republicans had officially shelved immigration reform.
Both disputes reaffirmed the GOP's identity as the champion of the forces most resistant to the profound demographic and cultural dynamics reshaping American lifeand Democrats as the voice of those who most welcome these changes.
And both clashes captured a parallel shift: While Republicans took the offense on most cultural arguments through the late 20th century, now Democrats from Obama on down are mostly pressing these issues, confident that they represent an expanding majority of public opinion.
Veteran pollster Stanley B. Greenberg captures this almost unprecedented Democratic assurance when he declares flatly: "Republicans are on the losing side of all of these trends."
The result is that amid public unease over Obama's economic and foreign policy record, cultural affinity has become the Democrats' most powerful electoral weapon. The party's deepening embrace of cultural liberalism may make it tougher for it to hold some red-state House and Senate seats, but is improving its position with the cosmopolitan states and growing demographic groups that key its presidential majority. In a year when so many other clouds are gathering over them, that's a trade most Democrats would probably take in a heartbeat.

Democrats have reason to be confident — all they have to do is look at the attitude of the diverse American public, the public education system and they see an ocean of potential RAT voters.
“The crux of the matter is whether people will vote cultural or economic issues.”

The people think first of their pocketbook. Cultural issues are somewhat far behind, unless you are fairly well off and can indulge in being culturally Holier than thou.
If you’d gotten away with all the immoral, unAmerican, abnormal, illegal things the left has since the 50’s, and in the position they are today. you’d be confident as all hell.
Why are Dems so confidence? With ‘Republicans’ like John, Lindsey and Thad, it doesn’t make ANY difference.
the economy sucks, the border is breached, illegals are bringing disease and disaster into our nation, veterans are needlessly dying, the IRS is purposely targeting innocent American....
all good reasons the rats should stay confident....
“Demography is destiny.”
You need only look at Europe to see where we are headed. The power of the tribe will be all that matters when the % of the population is in their favor. And with the Hispanics over here, and the muslims over there, it is only a matter of time.
And time is on their side, not ours. We have birth controlled and immigrated our chance out of continuing what was once the American Dream. We have no cultural identity as Americans anymore. It is African American, or Mexican American, or God-knows- what-American. Tribal identity over nationality.
We cannot survive as a nation with that going on.
Prepare accordingly.
“It is African American, or Mexican American, or God-knows- what-American. Tribal identity over nationality.”
Unfortunately, that is so “yesterday”. In my area, people don’t hyphenate anymore; they are simply “Ecuadoran”, “Peruvian”, “Indian”...

I was ripped apart by a FReeper for pointing out that we had lost the culture war; with few exceptions (gun control being the only one he could point out), we have lost on everything: abortion/euthanasia, “gay marriage”/family values, taxation/socialized medicine, affirmative action, illegal immigration/amnesty, public education, etc.
The left wins every issue by proposing something outlandish, then “settling” for what they sought to begin with (as a “compromise”). The Republocrats are one party with two heads; traditional Americans have steadily lost ground, and should accept that they will never be part of the mainstream “culture”.
It isn’t all doom & gloom, but as it has been since the dawn of time it is always easier for most people to do evil.
