I was furious that Thad Cochran slimed his way to victory, but every time we hardcore conservatives lose a battle, it seems a contingent of bitter-enders starts up about how the Republicans and Democrats are exactly the same, and how theyll refuse to vote in the general, and how theyll take their collective ball and go home.
Thats crazy talk. We can get even with the GOP establishment later; we need to beat the Democrats first.
Now, many of my good friends disagree with me here, but I respect them enough to say what I think. And I think that when we focus on the establishments antics in Mississippi instead of focusing on November, we make Barack Obama happier than if he got to play 18 holes with the ghost of Karl Marx.
Let us assume that Thad Cochran didnt play fair. Now let me assume the role of your father:
Life is not fair.
Yeah, I was shocked shocked! that our opponents refused to commit ritual suicide in order to allow our chosen candidate to waltz into the nomination that, a couple weeks ago, was his for his taking. Was anyone expecting the establishment to go quietly, to rollover, to not use every tool at its disposal to hold on to power?
Were conservatives. Were not supposed to make excuses, but Im sure hearing a lot in the wake of Cochrans win.
Yeah, his win. News Flash: Thad Cochran got more votes than our guy. That means our guy failed to perform the most important function of a conservative politician.
He failed to win.
Hell, he couldnt handle the GOP establishment calling him a racist. Why does anyone imagine he could have handled the Democrats doing it in November? Theyre the pros!
Yeah, Cochran dared to appeal to Democrats who voted for him. It would be nice to have other Republicans embrace this innovative concept.
Am I happy about the slanders Cochrans buddies spread, or about the way the K Street crew spent zillions to keep Thad awake and away from the livestock long enough to get nominated?
No, but that ship has sailed and sank. Winners leverage their assets into victory.
Am I suggesting that we forgo our vengeance? Never! Im all about payback. But getting even with these K Street creeps can wait. I say defeat the Democrats first. Instead of choosing to fight two opponents at once, we can deal with these establishment tools later from a position of strength when Reids reign is just a bad memory.
Im getting sick of this quitter talk about how we cant possibly win, about how everyones against us, about how this struggle being hard is some sort of cosmic injustice perpetrated upon us by mysterious forces beyond our control.
George Washington and his men ate their damn shoes as they shivered in Valley Forge. Thats adversity, not having to somehow find the strength to carry on after nominating a Republican who is sure to win in November and has a mere 88 percent conservative rating.
This isnt about our feelings. This isnt about our principles either. There is no principle that compels us to allow Barack Obama to retain a Senate majority that absolutely will confirm a Supreme Court justice who will absolutely vote to:
Might some GOP senate dork vote to confirm someone like that? Maybe, but a Democrat absolutely will. Refusing to support every GOP nominee means you are choosing to be silenced, disenfranchised and disarmed.
Yeah, thatll sure show Thad Cochran and all his pals. The only thing hed like more is a lap dance in the champagne room at the local 4-H Club.
So weve lost a battle. Weve lost them before, and well lose them again. Did you think this business of taking our country back would be easy? Did you expect a cakewalk? Well people, this is where we winnow out the summer soldiers and sunshine patriots.
My new book, Conservative Insurgency, is a speculative history of what it will take to win this contest for our nations soul, and it has a subtitle: The Struggle to Take America Back 2009-2041. Thats right this fight will take decades. The progressives couldnt run a great country like ours into the dirt overnight and we wont pick it back up in a day.
So heres the deal. We suck it up, vote for Thad if we live in Mississippi, and focus on fights where we can run up the score. Louisiana. Colorado. Alaska. How about Joni Ernst in Iowa? Are you so mad at the GOP that youll abandon this Army veteran to a trial lawyers puppet who thinks farmers are dummies?
Yeah, the establishment sucks. But so does helping it win by indulging your frustrations instead of standing up, brushing yourself off, and getting back in the ring for another round. You want to send a message? Let victory be your message.
But theres no easy way to win.
A third party isnt going to do it.
Refusing to vote for GOP candidates isnt going to do it.
Trying to occupy some pseudo-moral high ground by refusing to dirty your hands by making hard choices between sub-optimal options isnt going to do it.
Theres one path to victory.
We fight.
We fight for the best GOP candidate in the primary.
We fight for the GOP candidate in the general.
We fight, starting at the precinct level and working up, for control of the Republican Party apparatus.
Look how far weve come. Ted Cruz. Rand Paul. Mike Lee. Plus all the rest trying their best to prove their conservative bona fides to us. Oh, and Ill have fries with that, Eric Cantor.
All in just five short years.
Think how far we can go to returning America to greatness if we fight.
The two of you are “hijacking” this thread.
Stay on subject and leave the personal stuff out of it.
Thanks.
Understood.
Yes we do.
The solution again is to stop thinking of “winning with a human.” The devil will do dances around you all day long as long as you do.
“We havent won a battle in decades? What is your definition of battle, because in the case of this article it was a single election. Conservatives have won many battles in the last 2 decades, in fact the desperation in this particular battle was gratifying, even though it was a loss.”
Abortion, “gay marriage”, immigration, “nation-building”, socialized medicine...
“However, the black flag of the Islamic State is on the horizon.”
I live in NJ; that flag is a couple of miles to the east in Jersey City.
“Our way of life is not going to be “preserved”. History is not kind to those who wish to merely “preserve” their way of life. Unless you like paying jizya in return for a watered-down, empty suit version of your way of life.”
While I was referring to the culture war in which the libs have the upper hand, there are Christians who have survived with their way of life intact through centuries of Muslim oppression. Christians in Egypt, Syria, and Iraq have kept the faith (indeed, suffering for it rather than bend).
And you can’t point out any battle won? If you just want to focus on the negative have a good time with that but don’t try to drag me into it.
Cochran is 76 years old, how old is his mother?
“And you cant point out any battle won?”
Can you?
In 1994 we had 20 states that were "shall issue" on concealed carry permits, 17 "may issue", 12 "No Issue", and 1 unrestricted State. Today we have 37 "Shall Issue", 8 "May Issue", 0 "No Issue", and 5 Unrestricted States.
How about the "Contract with America" going way back to 1994? How about a balanced budget way back when? How about defeating Cantor for something more recent? How about District of Columbia v. Heller? Impeachment of Clinton? The rise of new media?
All great moments for sure; do you see any impact today, or any remnant of the country as it was in ‘94? With the exception of the gun rights, I see none; we’ve lost ground on everything else (abortion, taxes/government spending, affirmative action, family issues - including “gay marriage” and adoption, immigration, socialized medicine). If anything, I see the Republicans more aligned with Democrats on these issues against the American people than at any other point in our history.
If you think there is movement in our direction on any of these matters, then maybe I’m just missing it.
Obviously you want to focus on the negative. When you are done with your “woe is us” pity party please get back in the fight.
Will do; you keep whistling past the graveyard.
The cold hard truth is that we can never win this fight. Since the dawn of time tyranny has warred with freedom, and it will always be thus. All we can do is keep fighting because Tyranny will never quit.
“Go watch some sports, join the “hookup” culture, or otherwise numb yourself to reality with mindless pleasures like the overwhelming majority of our citizens.”
While I actually did take off work to watch two World Cup games today, the fact is that I’m a married father of sons who (unlike many of our citizens) has plenty at stake - I actually have future generations to be concerned about.
I expect no paradise on Earth; as a Christian I believe it is impossible to achieve, while we do what we can. Serious Christians today have to accept that their faith will never be embraced by the mainstream; Christianity was born in just such an environment. I just see no point in taking comfort from illusory successes.
FRegards.
Congrats. My Granddaughter is 2 and I worry about her future every single day. That is why I'm not going to give into negativity and stop fighting.
I just see no point in taking comfort from illusory successes.
They are real successes, not illusory successes , and partially enumerating them isn't the same thing as taking comfort in them. If you want to ignore any positive and focus purely on the negatives you go right ahead but for me, being overly pessimistic is just as dangerous as being overly optimistic.
