Tallahassee, Florida. Two major universities, several junior colleges, city government, county government, state capital, plus a plethora of federal offices. It is the only city I’m aware of that organized demonstrations to drive business away. The university bought out the Elbit manufacturing plant, at the pre-bubble collapse price, because, (I kid you not) “we don’t want that nasty defense business in our nice clean academic industrial park.” So, there went 300 jobs plus roughly 80 million a year in throughput. The building is still empty.
