I have received the American Community Survey and several post cards encouraging me to complete it. Having not received this before, I Googled it and found that it isn't sent out to the full populace like the Census is. It also appears to be a longer form of the Census selectively distributed in years other than Census years.
There are a lot of questions that I don't feel much like answering and I stopped when asked about the market value of my home, my insurance costs, and some others. Apparently, if I don't return the survey, I am subject to a fine and/or a call from a Census Bureau employee.
I used to not concern myself with these things and would just fill them out. Then I joined FreeRepublic and became suspicious of everyone and everything. Only slightly just kidding.
You are required by law to respond, but apparently nobody has been prosecuted or fined since the 1970 census.
You actually gave them your Social Security Number?
If you are really interested and want to spend time reading here is a link to multiple
ACS threads on Freerepublic.com over the past several years. Good luck.

The nature of some of the questions they ask probably is guided by some wonks at the census bureau attempting to comply with UN data base building through WHOdas http://www.who.int/classifications/icf/whodasii/en/
LOL! I didn’t say it was MY ss#. It was from some dead guy in the northeast where I never lived. Sound familiar? :>}
I wouldn’t fill it out...
Social Security Numbers of Dead Celebrities
I usually alternate between Nixon and Elvis. .
“Why doesn’t the Census Bureau just ask the NSA for the data? “
Because then they would not have to hire some lame-brained idiots to bother you. Just another way to “buy votes.”
“Wife and I escorted the census taker off our property a couple of years ago. He walked around a security gate and two No Trespassing signs.
I told him I would call the sheriff if he returned.
He didnt.”
Had the same experience myself. We live on a private road. I told the woman who showed up that I had answered all the legally required questions on the Census and that she was trespassing and should not come back for any reason.
Shredder fodder.
“They are very persistent. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between them and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. “
Just “tracting” for a different God!
“I didn’t say it was MY ss#....”
OK, whew!.....After reading your previous threads about Second Amendment issues (which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, by the way), you didn’t see like the kind of a guy who would willingly give up personal info to the almightly feds. Thanks for clearing that up.
Hmmmm......some dead guy in the Northeast’s SS#. I’m guessing....Connecticut? But that number is already used, by the resident who hangs out at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in DC. Can you imagine if a GOP President had numerous Social Security numbers from states he never lived in? The media would be screaming endlessly. But all we get is crickets because, hey, he’s a dem, and a black dem at that.
Ii asn’t as polite as you - my pseudo-census worker was somwone I know - a jerk in the village. I told him I had filled out the required forms for the 2010 census and that was it.
He argued. I told him he was recieving no answers from me. He came back 3 times, ever more persistent, even belligerent. I ordered him off my property - with instructions to not set foot on it again.
Meet him at the store often (we’re a one-store village - and he won’t speak to me. I consider that a plus. :)
Well him and maybe more than a few “trespassers” from the southern HEMIsphere. Maybe if some of those interlopers would contribute to MY contributions I could get some of my tax money back from the i f’n rs.
When anyone says the US law requires blah, blah, blah, without citing any actual law, they are usually just making it up or exaggerating big time.
Ignore it.
If someone comes to the door, you can say, “I think that person moved back to Mexico” or something like that and you are just renting or visiting. Maybe do not tell them that much, but that is a story you can be congruent with.
Here’s how I solved this “problem.” Pardon me for committing treason...
After all the postcards, etc. an IRS person called me. I asked that they quit sending the post cards. She asked why?
I explained that I had filled out the survey as they requested and mailed it back to them. She claimed (rightly so) that they never received it. I told her this appeared to be a problem between the IRS and the USPS.
She said they could mail me another survey. I explained that I had done my duty already and wasn’t doing any more.
Never heard from them again.
guess I’m not as lucky as most and get a personal visit. Received the ACS once, then another, then another. Threw them all away. No visit. Completed the last real census with name, number of people and that was about it. No one visited or followed up.
