I read elsewhere that Mr. IRS said that he was refusing to turn over to Congress any more information or even information on the supposed search for information because it was being “distorted” by Republicans!
How can he simply refuse to provide information to Congress?
And how can an appointed official publically express a partisan opinion that determines his noncompliance?
Now, if the Republicans take over Congress, all bets are off. Of course, they did so in 1994 and Slick Willie pretty much sandbagged them up until the Monica affair.
This regime is essentially lawless. The IRS chief could have stood up, pointed his finger around the hearing room, shouted “You guys are audited!” and stormed out. What would their recourse be?
Boehner should have a contempt citation written up and he should schedule a full House vote next Monday, and an immediate referral to a Court for a hearing..
And he should have a Bill prepared to immediately defund the IRS until they fully comply with all the supeonas.
Doesn’t matter if either action stands a chance of getting any results. Just do it.
He also said that he expected to serve out the remaining “three years” of his term. I hope that the GOP makes him eat those words by seeing that he is fired by whatever means they have. How dare he say that he will not cooperate.
He was pretty nasty and argumentative today.
