China has endorsed Argentina's position over the Falkland Islands affirming that the current situation "seriously harms the economic capacity of Argentina". During the two-day G77 summit held at the weekend in Santa Cruz, Bolivia at which China was a "special invitee", a statement was unanimously approved supporting Argentina's calls for dialogue to solve the "Malvinas Islands question". "We reaffirm the need for the governments of Argentina and the UK to resume negotiations on the 'Malvinas Islands question' in conformity with the principles and objectives of the United Nations and pertinent resolutions, so as to find a timely, peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute related to the 'Malvinas Islands question'," the statement read.

Right, give the Falklands back to Argentina ... and then give Argentina back to Spain!! :)
Having China jump into the middle of this is not good.
Cuba is only 90miles off the coast of the USA. The Falklands are several hundreds miles off.
I think it’s clear that the US needs to reclaim its territory.
The 1982 Falkland Islands War was what became the last gasp of a dictatorial Argentine Military government. The current unrest in Argentina is due to the financial disaster that the neo-Peronista Kirchner governments. The latest salvo in this area is a days-old ruling by the US Supreme Court that the Argentine Government owes a $1.5 Billion debt to US Firms that must be paid ahead of current debt payments. This is money that Argentina does not have! (Note to Obama Admin.: debts have consequences!)
So now, Argentina looks to alternatives like any other cornered rat and the nearby Falklands with potential oil riches and patriotic incentive appears to be attractive. Argentina has aligned itself with Iran and other anti-U.S. countries and thus is somewhat immunized from American pressure.
Even though it is not supported by the Obama administration, it is the Falkland Islands. And old enough when UK recaptured them. Margaret Thatcher saw to they were kept by the UK.
No it isn’t good. And yet, it was entirely predictable that this sort of thing would happen. Our kids and grand-kids are going to pay a terrible toll due to our massive mistakes with China.
I saw the same banner at the and explained it to my recent graduate exactly the same way. Great minds, right?
What’s notable is that Argentina’s entire claim is based upon their proximity to it. They never at any point controlled it and it was unpopulated till Europeans came over.
And I suppose Argentina supports Chinas equally highly dubious claim to the Spratly Islands.
Intriguing. One wonders if this could be the location of the ChiComs’ first (oblique) thrust at the traditional Atlantic powers? Zero has already indicated where his sympathies lie on this issue, great place for China to insert a wedge between UK/US.
If China really wanted to drive a wedge between the UK and the US, they would have come out in support of Britain whilst the won takes the Argies’ side over the issue...
By "solve" there they mean "we totally get what we want and Britain sucks it up". Dialogue to solve...what dialogue?
