Rose petals rain on Lady Liberty in D-Day tribute

New Yorkers flocked to Liberty Island for a stunning D-Day anniversary tribute in which 1 million red rose petals rained down on the Statue of Liberty on Friday.

A crowd of more than 200 — war veterans, students and tourists among them — gazed in awe as helicopters showered the statue with petals in honor of the 70th anniversary of the invasion.

Mike Roper, 74, a history teacher at York Prep, said he came to teach his students that surviving vets are living history. ... Staged by the group The French Will Never Forget, the ceremony featured a band and fire boats spraying colored water.

Nearly 160,000 Allied troops stormed five beaches in northern France on June 6, 1944, to hasten the downfall of Nazi Germany. It was biggest sea-based military invasion in history.

Flocked? Sigh. Only 200 from a city of 7,000,000(?) (mostly liberals). Sad.

It must not have been advertised much. This is the only article that I found after reading a comment here on FR about the event.

What a great gesture..!

You know what I think? I think it’s great they beat the Nazis, cuz you know what? If they hadn’t we’d now have a gummint...

1. Featuring intrusive surveillance

2. That aggravated ethnic tension between groups, victimizing one or more for the benefit of others

3. That pushed other, smaller countries around

4. That militarily intervened in far away civil conflicts it had no real stake in

5. That treated it’s own citizens like enemies

6. That constantly passed a new blizzard of exacting laws from which it was totally exempt

7. That meddled around in the economy, playing favorites and even taking direct ownership of major corporations

GOOD THING D-DAY WENT WELL..!!

"Thank you to the Greatest Generation for fighting against National Socialism."

I'll second that. And thank you, people of France, for that beautiful tribute.

Things like this should be promoted in advance more than they are by the media.

Thank you for posting this.
How sad that only 200 out of the whole city of NY showed up for this, hard to imagine.

Thank you for posting this. Didn’t know about it, and I live in NYC. So it certainly was not advertised much. Also, when I look at some of the photos included with the article, it looks to me like there are more than 200 people just in the background. Anyway, it sounds like a wonderful and touching tribute - would have loved to have seen it!
