NEW DELHI: A MiG 29K naval combat aircraft has suffered damage while landing on the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya during operations in Arabian Sea off the coast of Goa, a Navy official said today.
The Russian-origin aircraft had taken off from the Naval airbase INS Hansa in Goa yesterday and was landing on the aircraft when it carried out a 'hard-landing' causing damage to the nose-wheel undercarriage, the official said.
The pilot of the aircraft is safe and the further details of the damage are being assessed, they said.
The Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry (BoI) into the incident on the aircraft carrier procured from Russia at a cost of over Rs 15,000 crore late last year.
In this incident onboard the 44,500 tonne warship, the pilot missed the first two arrester wires used as aid by the pilot for landing on the carrier and while he was trying to take off again, it got stuck in the third arrester wire causing a hard-landing, Navy officials said.
MiG 29Ks have been procured by India from Russia and India is the only country in the world which operates these twin engine naval fighters.
India has ordered for 45 of these aircraft and this is the first accident involving these aircraft.
OK.
just drat.... hate it when that happens
That MiG looks to be carrying a couple of cruise missiles with under fuselage intakes. Dunno what the big centerline package is.
Was McCain the pilot?
Those are some big air intakes. I wonder what it looks like on radar.
Something tells me that pilot’s fighter career is over. If he’s lucky, they’ll still let him fly something less difficult.
Fuel tank. You will have no range without it.
No way. These guys are quite new at this. Gonna be some f-ups. He's also, please note, still alive. We also don't know how well this Russki puppy flies in the carrier role, to which it was adapted .... not designed.
This ain't that easy. We've lost two in two days. Part of the game.
I think those 2 reports were the same plane, Harrier.... unless there was another one.
Could be a standardized pod for various payloads - from an extra fuel tank to a SIGINT/ELINT machinery. Wikipedia explains:
The types of combat missions undertaken by the MiG-29K can be increased by adding optronic/infrared imaging reconnaissance pods.
The Russians are masters at A-A ECM, they know we have excellent BVR capability. Like their efforts against carriers, instead of trying to compete directly, they go for the less expensive counter.
Some years back, their jamming pods completely blinded our F-15s in a joint exercise against the Indians, taking away the BVR advantage of the F-15 and forcing the merge. Was said the F-15s were not latest top level capability radar, but still.
I would hope the F-22 can illuminate the adversary and ID/track without them knowing they are in the area and trying to jam. Might get off the BVR shot that way.
LPI radar and stealth have to be making A-A very interesting.
Interesting.
I don’t understand much of it — but I think I get the general idea.
“Fuel tank.”
You’d think they could have done something a bit more conformal? Maybe the Russians did not want to sell that part of the airplane.
Two different incidents:
(CNN) -- A U.S. Navy fighter jet crashed into the water off Southern California while approaching an aircraft carrier Wednesday night, the Navy said. The pilot of the F/A-18E Super Hornet ejected, was recovered and is in stable condition aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the Navy said Thursday. The aviator is expected to make a full recovery.
The crash happened hours after a separate military plane went down in California: the nonfatal crash of one of the Marines' AV-8B Harriers into a neighborhood in Imperial.
Oh, thanks
There were confused that a second Harrier had crashed somewhere
These things happen.
Carrier ops are very complex. No chance India or China are going to be able to master it for at least a few decades.
Granted that the Vikramaditya is new to the fleet, but India has other carriers, and has had them for years. Their pilots aren’t new to carrier landings, just to landing on this particular ship.
And the Mig-29K is a purpose-built aircraft variant, not an adaptation, and has been in service in India since 2004. The 29K was actually designed for the other Kiev-based carrier variant (The Kuznetsov), but India’s were part of the deal that got them the Vikramaditya, so are intended to be used with this ship.
From the Wikipedia:
The Indian Navy has been operating carrier battle groups since 1961, with its first carrier battle group formed around the now decommissioned INS Vikrant.
Indian pilots already know carrier landings.
