"Desertion is not a solitary crime. It is a crime against the tens of thousands of veterans who are huddled together in the harsh cold of this winter. Against all those who have sacrificed. Against all those who have fallen. Against all the women and the children we have left alone to fend for themselves. I regard the crime of desertion as a sin against the army. Duty is ours, the consequences are God's."

I saw George Washington order the hanging of a couple of deserters on “Turn” a couple weeks back.
It wasn’t a lack of compassion but an act of compassion for the others who served.
Come back with your shield or on it.................that goes waaaaay back..................
Ahhhh yes, Gods & General Jackson.....the movie without an ending....
The Romans used to put them on the cross. Or make fellow Legionaires beat them to death.
Either way works for me.
Ahh good ole Stonewall. I was always a fan of another of his quotes, “You may be whatever you resolve to be.” I saw it every day in college walking into barracks.
Love the rebels or hate them, they were the best generals in the country. Smart and tough is what good leaders should be
When was the last deserter convicted? I was wondering because if it was recent, what right does the military have to let this guy go?
They used to shoot deserters....
I knew a deserter who was sent back home from Nam when his younger sister died. He had been in combat and when he got home he decided to not go back. He was never held accountable.
It is considered cowardice in the face of the enemy and is punishable by death according to the UCMJ.
Desertion in the face of the enemy is different from some guy in the motor pool in Louisiana going AWOL to shack up with his girlfriend. When I was a military officer at a stateside base, we had the occasional guy stop coming to work; after 30 days, he was technically a deserter rather than just AWOL. If they were apprehended, punishment ranged from reduction in rank, or a fine, to discharge under less than honorable circumstances. We never got around to shooting any of them. Hell, we didn’t even waste time looking for them unless we suspected foul play.
One of my neighbors fled the Marines after getting his orders to go to Iraq.
The Marines lost a really worthless guy when they lost him.
Should be noted these are NOT Jackson’s words.
They are dialogue from a movie about Jackson.
It wasnt a lack of compassion but an act of compassion for the others who served."
We were talking about that very scene this morning.
Interesting site here with lots of info about the Revolutionary War spy ring from TURN...also trivia, gifs, historical customs, etc. (And I for one am glad to have Maj. Andre's braid explained).

Private Eddie Slovik in WW2. Last one I know and it was difficult to get done. Lots of Folks against it which probably why none since.
At Valley Forge, there were 2 incidents of desertion.
The first was not punished by execution. But, the deserters were punished.
The second, however, resulted in a firing squad. A certain number of deserters [drawn by lots?] were condemned. And, a certain number [again, drawn by lots?] were selected to be the firing squad. The rest of the deserters had to watch.
Result? No more desertions ...
The Kinston Hangings (Part 2): A Generals Fatal Anger
General George Pickett ordered the hanging of 22 North Carolina men.
