Why reparations for slavery could help boost the economy
Reuters ^ | June 4, 2014 | Michael Maiello

In the May 21 issue of The Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates re-opened the question of whether the United States government should pay reparations to African-Americans for the crimes of two and a half centuries of slavery, 60 years of Jim Crow-style segregation and decades more of racist housing policies, zoning and community development. His conclusion — that a great accounting of wrongs must take place, as well as a decision about how to make amends for them– has inevitably sparked disagreement. But set that aside. Imagine we have decided yes, as a society we must pay a price for these injustices, and it must be large. Those payments could well constitute the stimulus that the U.S. economy needs to take it into the next century.

To the economy, stimulus is stimulus, as long as it’s done right. Whether it is paid to a group of people based on where they live, their ethnicity or their religion might matter to politics, but to the economy, it doesn’t matter – as long as the money is put to work through either consumption or investment. The reparations-as-stimulus idea gets a short mention from Coates, who writes that:

so giving my money to a bunch of black people is going to be spent better than if I just spend it as I see fit?

So, if my white ancestor died fighting slavery, I would have to pay reparations to someone who is the descendent of an African slave trader?

No reparations without repatriation.
Also, end to all welfare benefits.
Reparations deducted from same.

That would “repair” things, as in, true reparations.

Yes.

…the word “reparation” is derived from a Latin word meaning to “restore” or “repair.” So if you want to get literal and borderline Aspergery about it, real reparations would consist of returning African Americans to roughly the state they’d be in if they’d never been plucked from their ancestral homelands. If ex-Africans have truly been damaged by being transported to America and increasing their numbers a hundredfold in the process, it would stand to reason that they’d currently be doing better in Africa.

A Reparations Plan That Makes Sense

And while wer'e at it, due to the fact Democrats historically have been the party of slavery and resisted civil rights, all registered Dem voters should be on the hook.

It really has nothing to do with slavery anymore. It’s a “White Privilege” tax now.

I will gladly personally pay reparations to every slave I have ever owned. Anyone and everyone else who thinks they are entitled to reparations from me - you can wish in one hand and {excrement} in the other. See which fills up first.

the crimes of two and a half centuries of slavery

In less than eighty years after the Constitution established America the Constitution abolished slavery everywhere in America.

I’ve always wondered why black Americans don’t celebrate that accomplishment instead of spinning it into centuries of slavery.

I’m all for reparations for slavery. My ancestors were brutally repressed under the yoke of the Roman empire. I want my reparations from the Italians!

In the spirit of compromise, I’ll settle for a free house in Tuscany. Three bedrooms two bath with a view, please.

Take my $10 and slide it down the table for the other guy to spend.

Of course, by the time your $10 gets handed over to government bureacracy and handed to "the other guy," it's only $5. Gotta pay living wages to the federal workers, unions, and overhead associated with "the system."

“We gave already. The Union lost 77 combat dead every day for four years straight without a day missed. We have given Blacks who were never slaves things they have used to gain positions they have no credentials for save for the color of their skin. Go away.”

Well said. Never looked at it that way before. Sadly, their ancestors traded in that blood-won FREEDOM for another kind of SLAVERY, and We The People are now SLAVES to the STATE to support THAT!

It’s a win/win. Not. Grrrrr!
