SAN ANTONIO - It's a heartbreaking story -- a flood of immigrant children being sent over the border alone, into the U.S., with no adult to care for them. About 1,200 are being housed here at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland.
Their plight comes at a huge cost to American taxpayers. It's estimated caring for those unaccompanied immigrant children, as the government calls them, will cost you more than $2 billion this year.
Democrats and Republicans in Congress are blaming each other for why so many kids are crossing the border.
Some of the unaccompanied immigrant children housed at Lackland are as young as three. In 2011, only 6,560 are estimated to have crossed into the U.S. This year the government is expecting 60,000.
"These are children. We can't turn them out on the streets. We can't dump them out at the border," said Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
Doggett says the U.S. has a duty to help the young people unite with family members who are already here or find them foster homes. In the meantime, the children are receiving classroom education as well as medical and mental health services.
San Antonio's Lamar Smith and other Republicans in Congress blame the influx on President Obama and his push for amnesty and immigration reform.
"The message is, get across the border and you're home free," Smith told us. "That's what is attracting so many young people to come across the border."

This should be turned around as yet another disgrace perpetrated by Mexico.
Democrats have announced today that not only will they be pushing to allow our newly accepted ‘migrants’ to our bosom with a full-boat entitlement ride, they will be seeking a lowing of the voting age for certain affected children.
Give ‘em a box lunch and couple of bottles of water.
Load ‘em on box cars.
Send ‘em back.
Why not blame Mexico?
If it came to my children and grand children getting what they needed and allowing a bunch of illegal alien children being to consume what bit of resources we have left, I'd bus every one of them to the nearest border and unceremoniously dump them.
So the unused military bases in TX and CA are now child pounds, where unaccompanied children of Mexico are dumped like cats and dogs, for U.S. taxpayers to care for.
How many of these children have had their immunizations? How do we know? If a disease sweeps through such crowded quarters, there could be many dead children. Whose fault would that be? Obama and the Democrats, because they got the whole amnesty for the children idea going as a lure for parents to send their kids to the border. Just horrible.
Here we go.
Trade them all back to Mexico for our one Marine being held there.
How about just turning them over the the Mexican government?
If they are such innocent children, how the HELL are they getting across the border by themselves? Why are they not being turned back at border crossings? Why would the rest of the border be so safe and porous as to allow them to just walk in and show up somewhere, looking for aid and comfort?
This HAS to be some intentional B S going on by the current administration, IMHO.

$2 bil/ 60,000 = over $30,000 per child. You have got to be kidding me. There is some major corruption going on.
Send the kids to Mexico’s orphanages.
the Truth ... this is an invasion designed to create havoc and eventually cause America’s collapse. To believe anything else is to believe a lie. Anyone thinking mexico is not working with the enemy believes another lie.
Two billion is low balled on purpose. Another lie.
Here’s an idea: Build a fence so strong and well guarded that the idiots will know there is no hope of these children crossing the border, and they will keep them home.
Liberals don’t call amnesty invasion it isn’t PC.
Send them to Doggett's house.
Seriously though the Federal government has a myriad of ways to stop this INVASION including troops on the border, jailing employers of illegal aliens, withholding federal funds of sanctuary cities, freezing the assets of Mexico. But is doing nothing because Uncle Scam is an active participant in this invasion.
They should bus them to the nearest Mexican consulate and insist that Mexico take care of their citizens.
Because they're technically right?
After all, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans have made any appreciable effort to close the border.
