“.....candidates should say its a states issue.”
But it’s not. Every state that’s voted on “gay marriage” has voted against it. It’s then taken to the courts where a judge decides any law against “gay marriage” is “unconstitutional.” Then the pressure is put on voters to say, OK, so “gay marriage” is all right after all.

Unfortunately, I think Washington State broke the pattern of every state where a public vote was held, voted against Gay Marriage. I don’t know if they are the only one.
However, Iowa and so on, it was made legal by judges or legislatures as in NY State.

Yeah, that used to be out strongest argument against. But it's not true anymore.
We have lost the last four elections on this issue. And with the way polls are trending, gay marriage bans would fail today in many states where they passed before.
Plus look at the states where it was passed by legislatures. There were no mass protests, no turning out of those legislators in significant numbers.
We can no longer use the argument "Americans don't like or want gay marriage" because clearly, unfortunately, by any rational measure they do. We have to admit that before we can ever hope to change it.

At least five states have approved via ballot initiative and a few more via the legislature (such as New York and New Jersey).
