This is the third or fourth incident I've that read about over last few days where a motor vehicle has been the weapon of choice to deliberately kill or attempt to kill someone. Clearly, we need more motor vehicle control laws. I suggest the following:

1. Required use of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System before every sale or transfer of a motor vehicle, including private sales and transfers.

2. A two week waiting period for the purchase of motor vehicles.

3. A two vehicle limit on the number of motor vehicles that a person can purchase each year.

4. Prohibit the possession of any motor vehicle with a capacity of greater than four cyclinders or 185 hp.

5. Require applicants for a drivers license to demonstrate "good cause" for the need for a motor vehicle.

I worked with Trooper Chris on several incidents, he was one of the good guys...this area is in mourning, the fourth law enforcement officer to die in less than two months...two Line of Duty Deaths and two killed in a tragic motorcycle accident...

A 3 gallon gas tank would limit range.

Pretty sad example of how dangerous this job is for even the most routine encounter. Prayers for him and his family.

I suspect traffic accidents kill more cops than anything else but I don’t have any stats to back it up. My state legislature just yesterday voted to name a stretch of highway after a cop killed in a traffic accident.

A year or so back a cop was deliberately run down by a couple of parolees who had just robbed a bank.

Prayers to his family and his coworkers. Law enforcement is a calling for saints.

Okay, so I read the article and was expecting to see where this guy was rabidly frothing at the mouth about how he finally got to kill him a cop, but none of that is there. All it says is that he was traveling across some states to see some family. After seeing more than a couple of incidents where cops lie to either make someone they have arrested look bad or to excuse beating the hell out of someone, I’m putting the premise of this story into the bullshit category until there is some credible evidence to back up the claims of the police.

I was wondering how they decided this was intentional.

Troopers Probe ‘Moth’ Effect in Crashes
January 8, 2011 by admin
Massachusetts State Police are investigating whether new brighter emergency lights on cruisers are to blame for a recent spike in the number of troopers being struck by other vehicles.
Seven state troopers were hit while standing outside their cruisers last year, including Sgt. Doug Weddleton, who was killed in June by an allegedly drunken driver.
Spokesman David Procopio said that the department is investigating whether the “moth effect” is to blame. That’s the theory that drivers, particularly those who have been drinking, are drawn to brighter lights like moths.
He says the agency is looking into different cruiser marking and different flash patterns to see if that makes a difference. He says the study is several months from completion.

Almond Upton, 60, told police he intentionally hit the trooper.

We should also learn from the dramatic drop in crime caused by high capacity magazine bans and limit fuel tanks to five gallon.

Prayers and condolences.

When will LEOs approach a vehicle on the passenger side?

You missed the caption under the perp’s picture where it has “Almond Upton, 60, told police he intentionally hit the trooper”.

Almond Upton, 60, told police he intentionally hit the trooper.

Possibly, but that's not what your link actually says.

Trooper Christopher Skinner, 42, died immediately after the vicious impact along Interstate 81. NEW YORK STATE POLICE Trooper Christopher Skinner, 42, died immediately after the vicious impact along Interstate 81. A Florida man was charged with murder Thursday after he intentionally struck and killed a New York state trooper who was standing outside his patrol car as he made a traffic stop along Interstate 81, police said.

IOW, the police say it was intentional. They don't even, in this article, even claim that the driver says it was intentional.

The guy fairly obviously has some mental issues.

Upton continued on for several yards before he ditched his white truck and ran into the woods, where cops found him about an hour later without any clothes on, WBNG-TV reported.

You’re still relying on what a cop said another person said ,, I don’t buy it unless it was recorded ,, cops lie.

Back in the mid 90’s, they routinely used speed traps in this area and there were a few uniformed nuts who would walk out on the highway (where cars were driving 70+) and point cars over to the side. All the people who stopped got tickets, I never stopped.

This is totally unecessary because New York has a "Captain Obvious" law that requires drivers to move over to the next lane if they can do so safely when passing a cop who is out of his vehicle. The State Troopers have even set up sting operations to entrap violators.

They do that around here if there's heavy traffic or the driver doesn't pull well off the road. They also park the car at a slight angle to offer a bit of protection.

On the other hand I also wonder whatever happened to slowing down or pulling over for emergency vehicles.
