Pope Francis Says He Might Retire
Daily Beast ^ | 05/28/2014 | Barbie Latza Nadeau 

In little-noticed remarks aboard the papal plane this week, the pontiff said he wouldn’t rule out following Pope Benedict XVI’s path.

Pope Francis gave a candid midair press briefing to reporters traveling from back from the Middle East to Rome during which he talked about sex, money, and satanic Mass—and retirement.

After a grueling but ultimately successful three-day visit to one of the most complicated regions on the planet, the idea of retirement probably sounded pretty good to Francis. So it is no surprise that when reporters traveling with him on the papal plane asked if he would consider resigning like his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, he said he wouldn’t rule it out.

“I will do what the Lord tells me to do. Pray and try to follow God’s will. Benedict XVI no longer had the strength and honestly, as a man of faith, humble as he is, he took this decision,” Francis said, according to a transcript of his press conference published in La Stampa’s Vatican Insider. “Seventy years ago, popes emeritus didn’t exist. What will happen with popes emeritus? We need to look at Benedict XVI as an institution, he opened a door, that of the popes emeritus. The door is open, whether there will be others, only God knows. I believe that if a bishop of Rome feels he is losing his strength, he must ask himself the same questions Pope Benedict XVI did.”

I don't think the gay cardinals "had anything" on Benedict --- if it's blackmail you're implying. I think they just blocked him in all the complicated, underhanded, lying, devious, hostile-oppositional, passive-aggressive ways they can. Maybe they threatened other innocent parties, maybe an array of them, who they could drag through the filth or even physically endanger.

Benedict went to the only power that can prevail --- devotion to profound prayer to the only Lord, Jesus Christ --- and I believe that was the right thing.

Not that I have any special insider information. I don't.

I don’t know, I haven’t seen the whole movie, but I’ve seen highlights and the run of all “the best scenes and lines” in the move. Tombstone comes across to me like it’s overdone with two kiddies who haven’t grown up yet as the stars.

Top 10, for sure. But three of top ten were spoken in this scene from True Grit.

Pappy O'Daniel has my vote.

We don’t have journalists any more. We have trolls with press credentials.

Precisely!

Then why didn't he stand and fight the evil, as a true leader would?

The plausible explanation is that he was complicit and the Lavender Mafia could prove it.

It’s all conjecture at this point. I would think standing up publicly to threats would be a good thing, but I know -zero- facts about this case.

“It’s one of the greatest lines in movie history.”

That’s what I was looking for the other day for the Angelou death announcement.

Another plausible explanation was that he was an old man who was basically an academic theologian, which is not a particularly useful skillset for running a major institution in a time of crisis. He acted in what he saw as the best interest of the church.

The cardinal is showing respect, not worshipping. Only God is worshipped by Catholics.

Yours is A plausible explanation, not THE plausible explanation.

Another, IMO, MORE plausible explanation is exactly what Francis suggested, he was old, tired, and lacked the strength to continue in his duties.

What crisis, other than self-imposed crisis?

All Popes are old. A strong philosophical underpinning, what you call 'academic', is a great strength, not a weakness. Benedict was and is a strong man. He saw deep evil in the Church that he ran. He quit in response. That is not "in the best interests of the Church".

I cannot help but reach the conclusion that, putting it very charitably, Benedict saw the evil within him, at risk of being exposed, to have fatally compromised his ability to carry out his mission.

So can a Pope Emeritus fill the position on an interim basis if/when the present Pope dies in office?
