History Channel's 'The World Wars' Chock Full of Major Historical Errors
NewsBusters ^ | May 29, 2014 | P.J. Gladnick

Did you know that the Communists stormed the Winter Palace and overthrew the Czar?

If you are right now screaming at your computer screen in anger, congratulations. That means you are more informed on the subject of history than the entire History channel. The error cited above is but one of the many that the History Channel included in their three part series, "The World Wars," this week. The amazing thing is that not only a particular History Channel writer made these errors but that nobody at the History Channel spotted them. Are they so involved in the "history" of Ancient Aliens over there that they have completely lost track of real history? The lack of historical knowledge at the History Channel is astonishing as evidenced by the following errors in the series.

I also noticed a young Mussolini in WWI using a Manlicher-Carcano rifle. Put a scope on it and the History Channel can place Mussolini in the Texas School Book Depository.

They might as well have thrown in some M60s and 551 Sheridan tanks for even more inaccuracies.

Until these threads, I didn’t know about this series. I’m no super expert either but I would be too annoyed with the problems to enjoy any good parts.

I used to be a hardcore history channel watcher until a few years ago.

The PT Boat took him to a B-17, which took him to a train, which took him to ?Sydney.

Congrats or condolesences to all who watched the whole thing. I lasted 1/2 hour before heading for the bunker and working on a model. I really got into ww1 about 3 years ago and have read quite a bit. Watching this would have been like watching PEARL HARBOR and believing it is accurate.

missed the reference

Nah. Hogan's Sheila Test only works BEFORE the unkind cut, Many Australia sheepokes are not all the way there yet. Test not 100% reliable, mate.

My reference? Only a GBTG would wear that hat Hogan sports in the movies. Lash LaRue? Meet Liberace.

I distinctly remember Bluto from “Animal House” saying:

“Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”

In the proms for this they showed before and after pictures of the various characters. Did anyone notice the impossibility in the picture of Hitler?

Hint, any photographer should notice it instantly.

They also showed B-17s in the Battle of Britain part, why? There is plenty of historically accurate film footage out there.

I gave up on the History Channel a few years ago. They are just trying to sell advertising time, with no concern about historical accuracy.

I read too much history to bother with The History Channel anymore. I could tell by the ads that this series looked pretty lightweight.

I think their first error was when they decided that Germany and Russia and Japan were the good guys.

The World at War is a great series. I guess what sums it up for me is that when I talked to my wife (who had been out of town) about all the inaccuracies, she simply said, “What do you expect from a bunch of 25 year old kids who know absolutely nothing about history, with the exception of the liberal garbage they have been fed!”

Just one other thing that maybe has been touched on. They had MacArthur as a five star general when he was commanded to the Philippines by Roosevelt. With a channel that is supposed to be the “History Channel” couldn’t they have afforded a reputable historian to check it for accuracy?

I grew very bored with last nights finale and changed the channel. I didn’t know FDR was such a military genius /s. It seemed the agenda wasn’t so much history but emulate the template of “ How America Was Made” series.
