At an unknown campaign stop before the presidential election, now President-elect Petro Poroshenko promised to make strengthening the Ukrainian army his top priority. Porohsenko said he could attract volunteers by upping the salary from $50 a month to $83 a day and providing each volunteer with $83,000 in life insurance. He pledged to make the change on May 26. EuroMaidan PR, the official public relations arm of the EuroMaidan Revolution, made the subtitles to the 1:17 video.
Promising’s one thing, delivering is another.
Still, if he could deliver on that promise...83 bucks a day is probably a very comfortable wage in Ukraine.

In South Korea privates get paid about $76 a month (less than minimum wage which is about $4.20 an hour or something)
It’s extravagant considering many expenses are already covered. (Just consider that it WAS $50 a month.) I don’t think American privates are paid near that much, and the wages of comparable work in Ukraine are probably a fraction of what Americans get.
Sounds like they’re signing up mercernaries rather than patriots.
I have some doubt that this is correct. They simply don’t have the money to support an army at that price. They had one of the greatest armies in the world when they became independent.....and blew it.
I’ve heard they’ve had to reinstate the draft due to lack of soldiers willing to fight their own people.
With pay like that maybe they can raise a real professional force.

No reason at all. The question is why WOULDN’T they serve for any less money; why does the Ukraine army have to pay so much more money than they WERE?

Not a problem with Obama money.
It worked in Georgia at the time with US taxpayers’ help.
A country was still oxacart, but government buildings were world class, state employees and military were paid well, times over the rest of population.

Current exchange rate for the Hrivna is about 11.5/1 against the dollar. That is a pretty big bump. Potatoes are at about 8 Hrivna for a kilo (2.2 lbs)
