Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said he would strive to be like Lyndon Johnson, the Democrat famous for expanding the U.S. welfare state through the "Great Society," if he were elected president.
According to the Miami Herald, Bush made those comments Wednesday night in San Antonio, Florida at Saint Leo University, while speaking about education, immigration, and energy policy.
Bush did not address Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty programs, about which Ronald Reagan once famously quipped, "We had a war on poverty, and poverty won."

So he wants to be Vice President and then.........
Uniparty ping-a-ling.
Jeb is not a weasel. He was more a good leader than politician when he was The Governor of Florida. I don’t know why he would make that kind of statement, (if he made it.) As a resident of Florida, I’ve only known him to be truthful, moral, fiscally conservative, and good manager of the affairs of this state.
Unfortunately, come 2016, when Jeb has the full backing of Karl Rove and every GOP establishment super-pac, they'll be busy twisting into pretzels telling us how "conservative" and how "different from the Democrats" this LBJ protege is.
Yes, I agree in general that Senators are not well suited for the Presidency. I was also ignoring the politics in this case.
Jeb and LBJ are completely different from each other in personality and experience.
It’s a silly thing for Jeb to say.
Plus, I vote based on policy, which means Jeb is not on my list.
LBJ was a multiple assassin even before he masterminded the JFK hit. Then, most likely, he went on to MLK and RFK. Great guy for Jeb to emulate.
He’s a weasel.
No, they were Beagles, and he did lift them by their ears. Utterly vile man by any standard, whose profound evil is only exceeded by that of the Mahdi.
Has Rove announced yet that Jeb would be the best Republican to lose to the next Democrat?
Now we know who is going to challenge Hillary in the primary.
Go primary Hillary, Jeb, you’re in the wrong party!
GOD HELP US ALL!
I still remember LBJ! I’ll pass!
They called his brother Lyndon Baines Bush. Now they can call him that too. WTF is he thinking? Do we have money hidden somewhere that we can spend? Or does he just not give a s__t about bankrupting the country?
Great! Thanks for posting that.
Did you know that North Korea is also a Constitutional Republic? There is nothing inherently "good" or "bad" about that form of government. There is also nothing inherently "good or "bad" about democracy. Liberty on the other hand is inherently good.
We just happen to have had the best constitution in the history of man because it properly limited the power of government and created the most liberty for the most people.
It worked for a while.
The senator from the Pentagon. Aim high, governor.
He did good things for education in FL. That said, if he governs like LBJ, he’s no one I would vote for.
I’ve always said LBJ was one of the most disastrous presidents in history. He practically singlehandedly destroyed the black family, and that makes him guilty of a whole lot.
Oh, my mistake. Thank you for the correction.
And I totally agree with you about el presidente LBJohnson.
Here's from the original article:
SAN ANTONIO -- Jeb Bush wouldnt say Wednesday night whether or not hes likely to run for president in 2016, but at Saint Leo University he did suggest a surprising role model for the sort of president hed strive to be: Lyndon Johnson.
No, the conservative former Florida governor didnt hail Johnsons Great Society initiatives. Instead, he hailed Johnsons forceful, hands-on leadership that among other things produced a 25 percent across-the-board income tax cut.
He went and he cajoled, he begged, he threatened, he loved, he hugged, he did what leaders do, which is they personally get engaged to make something happen, said Bush, who recently read Robert Caros latest Johnson biography.
So Jeb Bush wasn't saying he favored policies like Johnson's.
He was saying he'd lead in the style he thought Johnson led -- that he'd be a hands-on rather than a disengaged President.
You can hate the guy -- I don't like him much myself -- but don't put words into his mouth.
