At Least 8 Carlsbad Homes Lost In Poinsettia Fire (arson suspected)

Firefighters say they are getting the upper hand on an aggressive Carlsbad fire that erupted Wednesday morning and had destroyed at least eight homes, but they still have days of work ahead to put out the blaze.

Dubbed the Poinsettia fire, it had burned 400 acres and was 10 percent contained by Wednesday night, city officials said. Besides destroying homes, the blaze had also severely damaged an 18-unit condominium complex and two businesses. (City officials initially said it was eight condo units.)

County Supervisor Bill Horn, whose district includes much of North County, speculated that arson had to be behind the spate of fires.

"I question whether or not six fires haven't been set by somebody," Horn said. "That's just my thought. But I've never seen anything like this in 20 years."

Carlsbad Fire Chief Michael Davis said arson is not being ruled out.

The claim is that arsonists are by and large crazy and deserving of internment in a mental facility.

But there are some people that are just too dangerous to leave hanging around anywhere.

Sometimes we just have to take out the garbage.

I worked up a quick timeline on the fires today, and not including the Bernado Fire which started Tuesday morning and is still burning, I counted 13 fires by 5pm when they seemed to stop. (LA times had something about a woman and others being detained in the 405 freeway fire but it nails me on the subscription thing and won’t let me see the article). Pendleton is still burning after spreading to 6,000 acres.

I’m in the middle of this mess, and at 2am PT, am too wound up to sleep. I went thru the 2003 & 2007 San Diego wildfires; this set is crazy, unless you realize they’re no accident. One fire after another started all day Wednesday. Am convinced we have one or more firebug terrorists driving around throwing incendiary devices from a vehicle / vehicles. Large fire on Tuesday that was fought successfully. I think that outraged the terrorist(s), and for revenge, we’ve gotten one huge blaze after another. My guess is Earth Liberation Front (ELF) enviro nuts, who have made arson attacks in San Diego before. A number of the fires set adjacent to large, pricey homes in well to do areas, and three near the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.

Share your sentiment. US have allowed trash to pile up and now it stinks like last week’s fish. Today just happens to be “trash day” in my neighborhood. What a hodge-podge of stuff piled at the curb...some recyclable, some beyond recovery and believe it or not, some gen-U-ine good stuff. Same goes for the human variety.

I work at one of the evacuated schools from the Bernardo fire. We went to school yesterday but shouldn't have....

Right now I can see the red glow from the flames of the Cocos fire. We've been watching it from our back door since it was just barely a small plume of gray smoke.

Prayers up for all path of these fires and for the people having to fight them in 100+ degree temperatures.

I know that area pretty well. It used to be a hub of Hispanic migrant workers camps / shanty towns.

Absolutely. Odd are vanishingly small all of these fires were acts of nature or accidents. First thought is ROP or home grown terrorist cells running a coordinated plan.

Disclaimer: Hubby is a retired firefighter with 33 years under his belt.

Most fires are started by firebugs and the rest are usually accidents.
