Doctors must provide a Social Security number as part of the application process to practice medicine in California, a process that automatically denies undocumented immigrants from participating.
A bill by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), which passed the state Senate on Thursday, could provide those immigrants an opportunity to practice not only medicine but other professions, as well, easing the licensing process for psychologists and pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, and for about two dozen other occupations including real estate agents and security guards.
