As two state troopers struggled to arrest his father, a 19-year-old man armed himself with an assault rifle and shot them seven times, killing them outside his home in a remote Alaska village, authorities said in charges filed Saturday.

I have little respect for police and other LEO who abuse their power (family pet shooters, for example), but many have a thankless job that is randomly very dangerous, and are doing what they can to hold back the evil that seems omnipresent these days. Count me out as well.
Haglin had received reports that the elder Kangas was driving around the village, even though he doesn't have a valid driver's license. After Haglin approached Arvin Kangas at his home, the elder Kangas pointed to a rifle and suggested he would use it if Haglin did not leave, according to the charging document.
Haglin then contacted state troopers, who obtained an arrest warrant and accompanied him to Arvin Kangas' home a day after the confrontation.
VPSO Haglin cut the guy a lot of slack - told him to go home and not drive anymore (Arvin Kangas was reportedly drunk), so Kangas gets in a station wagon and starts driving recklessly and then points a firearm at the VPSO
Time to call the Troopers, no?
Indian Agent?!?
Pure, pure horse manure.
“I hate the PIGS as much as anyone on this site” Screw you Jake. I father and brother were Policemen ,not Pigs.
Now Alaskans know why most other states have the death penalty.
Not law enforcement here but you sound like the disgusting pig.
Trying to justify your disgusting remarks about “pigs” won’t help you at all. It’s tantamount to this kid saying, “I’m sorry.”
I didn’t buy that Police In Gang Situations excuse either.
We know what you really meant, BobL.
Or if you have the audacity to assert your Constitutional rights. "No, officer, I will not recite the alphabet backwards. I will also not answer any of your questions. Am I free to go now or are you placing me under arrest?" will usually result in a pissed-off cop.
What is this cop hating crap I see on FR lately? I’ve been here a long time, and it never used to be like this. What in the friggin world hapened?
I did 22 years of Law Enforcement, and I know a lot of good guys who are still serving. I do agree that there are some recent additions to law enforcement that should have never got past the hiring process, but thats a small few of them. Unfortunately, they do seem to do a lot of mischief, and make a few headlines.
In this case, two Alaska Troopers were shot IN THE BACK while they tried to serve a lawful warrant for the arrest of a suspect, and had to use force to get him into custody.
I would be the first to point out the problems if this was an unlawful arrest, or an excessive use of force, but it isnt here...sorry, but these cops did what they were supposed to do, and they were murdered.
Dont blame the cops for the bullshit laws that they are forced to enforce these days. Blame the legislators who pass this crap.
LOL.
What happened was the militarization of the police in general and widespread police refusal to submit to being observed and/or filmed while doing their work. Some of the post 911 theatrics made it worse. Start using a cell phone as a camera to record an interaction (yours or of a third party) and expect a beat down. Question their authority in some way and it is an instant arrest for contempt of cop. That is how many folks regards cops today, especially those in urban areas.
When I grew up their were neighborhood cops who knew the area and the people. There was a mutual trust. Not true today.
“Ive been here a long time, and it never used to be like this. What in the friggin world hapened?”
What happened? The militarization of law enforcement and the rampant abuses without consequences. Oh and a few thousand dead dogs. I grew up with some close friends who were cops. The steroid enhanced cops we have today are far different.
That said, these two cops were murdered and this guy deserves to fry.
Good point. In most towns illegals drive totally illegally and are then given favors, prizes, and government has lots of sympathy to the point where it's all but ignored.
As long as big biz gets their dirt cheap illegal labor, little else matters..
...and there are cops that are dirt bag criminals.
VPSOs in Alaska cannot be armed or have arrest authority. They are mainly the eyes and ears of the State Troopers. Being drunk in a dry Alskan village is a serious offense as is trying to smuggle the booze in or anything that can get you high including varoius cleaning products.
So he calls in the police.Ya know, sometimes when you think you are in the back of the beyond, some officious SOB of a government agent of some sort of other will show up to give you trouble over some minor matter. Then it quickly escalates. You just made an anus' day.
The Village Public Safety Officer Program began in the late 1970s
How much do they get paid, by whom, and who appoints them?
In any group you can find that
Repubs get cheap labor.
Dems get cheap votes.
I have to disagree, safest place to shoot an armed opponent.
