Responding to Georgia's new "guns everywhere" law, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta has pledged to keep guns out of Catholic churches, schools and other institutions.
...
"Before this legislation takes effect in July, I will officially restrict the presence of weapons in our Catholic institutions except for those carried by the people that civic authorities have designated and trained to protect and guard us, and those who are duly authorized by law and military officials," Gregory wrote.
...
Georgia has always banned licensed weapons in churches, but the new legislation drops the penalty to a $100 fine and the legal charge to a misdemeanor
...
"The last thing we need is more firearms in public places, especially in those places frequented by children and the vulnerable," Gregory wrote.
...
"The version of gun control that passed really offers churches no real protection, other than a fine for those licensed holders who might bring a weapon," Georgia Catholic Conference head Frank Mulcahy told the National Catholic Reporter.
...
"In this nation of ours, they have seldom been the locations where violence has disrupted the otherwise peaceful atmosphere," he added. "Yet even those occasions -- rare as they may be -- are not sufficient reasons to allow people to bring more weapons into God's house."
He charged that the new law "de facto makes firearms more available in places where they may allow violence to escalate."

The Archbishop has the right to keep guns off his property, but it is a foolish decision. I thank God (literally) that http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/10/colorado.shootings/index.html New Life Church in Colorado did not have such a foolish rule in December, 2007.[”It seemed like it was me, the gunman, and God,” said Jeanne Assam, describing her feelings as she confronted a man who charged into her Colorado Springs church Sunday firing a weapon. Assam, a church security guard with law enforcement experience, fired her own weapon at the invader and stopped his attack . . .]
...would that he put the same emphasis against those who support murdering unborn children...
Law abiding citizens will notice the sign of the gun-free zone and so will the jihadists.
Not until a massacre of citizens in a gun free zone takes place that that sign will come down.
Americans don’t seem to believe that they are walking targets until some of them get hit.
A good number of Jesus is disciples were carrying armaments when he was seized in the garden.
Keep in mind that many Catholic parishes also have schools on their grounds so carrying would be verboten anyway.
And more importantly I can take my tithes to a church who respects human life and my Rights.
Well then, Protestant churches should run CCW courses.
Ain’t Wilton the guy who was shagging some gal and now has a son?
“...except for those carried by the people that civic authorities have designated and trained to protect and guard us...”
You know who those people are, Your Excellency? They are not the police, since this is not their job. So who are you talking about?
While often their slogan is “To protect and serve”, it is a statement of nuance, because in truth, they do neither.
Perhaps if an enraged maniac busts in on your Cathedral while you are engaged in a ritual, and guns you down, perhaps the police can protect your Earthly remains from being eaten by a pack of wild dogs.
But even they will be hard pressed to guard you from flies.
Allow teachers to carry guns in school and let the kids know about it and see how many school shootings you have. I am a permit holder and a couple of times I found myself in church having forgotten to leave my gun in the car. I did no harm. Neither would anybody else unless they planned to. But if they did, how would their inclination to do so change if they knew somebody else in that church could put a hole in them? Archbishop, use your head and shut up about this issue. Worry about woman murdering their unborn children.
Duly authorized by law, eh? Sounds like the unorganized militia to me. Second amendment, and all that.
“Aint Wilton the guy who was shagging some gal and now has a son?”
I never heard that; he WAS the one who bought the palace for a residence with archdiocesan funds and is now going to sell it or use it for something else due to the uproar it caused...
If you don’t allow The Three Amigos, you’re just asking for trouble with banditos.
my gun’s in church with me everytime i’m there. pastor knows. first thing he asked is what kind it was.
But -- as you probably know -- there's a longstanding tradition that arms are not to be carried in Christian churches. In fact, some medieval churches (in Norway, for example) have a kind of balcony or portico around the outside whose purpose was specifically for the men to stack their weapons before entering the sanctuary.
On the contrary, there is actually a longstanding tradition from the Middle Ages of priests being armed during Mass. They would carry a short sword on their right hip so they could defend the Sacrament if marauders attacked during worship.
How do I know this? Because it still carries over into proper liturgical movements in the church today: The proper way to turn when facing toward or away from the congregation is for everyone to turn to their right. That way your "swords" don't get tangled up!
Perhaps not. See what Georgiacarry.org has to say about HB 826.
