Man, the 12 minute speech Sarah Palin gave to the NRA convention is awful. It's just witless, red-meat blathering, delivered in that nasal whine of hers that makes it sound like she's chewing wads of tinfoil. For people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like.
Fast-forward in the video to the 6:30 mark, though, and listen to what she says about terrorists. It's part of a long harangue about lily-livered liberals, delivered in such a way that makes Archie Bunker sound like Cicero. Money quote:
"Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."OK, stop. Not only is this woman, putatively a Christian, praising torture, but she is comparing it to a holy sacrament of the Christian faith. It's disgusting--but even more disgusting, those NRA members, many of whom are no doubt Christians, cheered wildly for her....
Palin and all those who cheered her sacrilegious jibe ought to be ashamed of themselves. For us Christians, baptism is the entry into new life. Palin invoked it to celebrate torture. Even if you don't believe that waterboarding is torture, surely you agree that it should not be compared to baptism, and that such a comparison should be laughed at. What does it say about the character of a person that they could make that joking comparison, and that so many people would cheer for it. Nothing good--and nothing that does honor to the cause of Jesus Christ.
If I thought that kind of hateful declaration and abuse of the Christian religion was what conservatism stood for, I wouldn't be able to call myself a conservative...

You are awesome.
Thanks. I assume you weren’t tripped up by my mistype?
I read your other posts too.
That applies anyway, torture or no torture, Intelligence and professional interrogation is not made useless because someone discovers lying.
Interrogation is not based on the premise that a secret agent or a source of information is not allowed to lie, or that you have no idea what to ask them, or how to discern lies from truth.
They don't just grab a guy and tell him "you look interesting, tell us something, anything, about anything, we don't know or care, we just want to hear stuff, then we will dispatch a SEAL team behind enemy lines, or a high risk bombing raid, or call off a presidential trip for no particular reason, just your say-so".
Mrs. Don-o, I hope you've read in my posts that I am also opposed to torture and my place in this thread is solely to expose "palaeocon" hypocrisy. But really, I must ask you if you are not familiar with all the Protestant "black legends" about the Catholic Church (or, perhaps more correctly, Catholic secular authorities) using torture. My point is not to further blacken the name of the Catholic Church or to excuse torture by Americans but rather to point out that during that time in history, I'm sure it was considered quite orthodox to defend torture. Now suddenly as soon as the beneficiary of such activities is alleged to be Jews and Israel, those same orthodox Catholics have, perhaps for the first time in their lives, discovered that they are against torture. This is what rankles me, not sincere opposition to inflicting pain on people until they say exactly what you want them to so you'll stop.
All excellent points, though once again, the ultimate guide is Divine Law.
I’m aware that The American Conservative is a paleocon site and that Pat Buchanan is one of its founders. And I’m no paleo and Buchanan makes me cringe.
However, do you know for sure if Rod Dreher shares Pat Buchanan’s views on Israel?
When you have known as many men as I have who have been water-boarded, and known about it for 40 or 45 years, it takes some of the shock and passion off of hearing about as few as 3 bad guys having it done to them.
I don’t have to take a position on it, to want to have tried to splash a little dose of reality on that guy’s ranting, in an effort to get the discussion down to a more calm level.
I want to learn more about what people think about it, but first they needed a little perspective.
So posts FR’s chief of the Palin haters according to the owner.

Waterboarding is (or was) part of U.S. Military Officer Training.
It is NOT Torture!
How many lives were saved due to waterboarding KSM?
This is NOT a case of “ends justifying the means”!
I had no idea there was any connection between Israel and torture. Seriously.
I don’t hate Sarah Palin. She’s never done anything to make me hate her.
In fact, there are very few politicos I do hate - Bill Maher would be one.
My hatred is really directed to those I’ve encountered on a personal level.
So don't. We don't believe you anyway, you self-righteous East Coast Political Machine prig.
What a moron.
Therefore --- by definition -- torture is (or was) part of U.S. Military Officer Training.
I've experienced what you might call "minor torture": flex-cuffs tight enough to turn parts of my wrists black and cut off sensation to parts of my hand--- no lasting damage to the nerves or the limb, in my case, but it was clearly intended by the cop to hurt me in order to make me more biddable.
Do you think "Dreher" could be an anagram for "Maher"? Have you ever seen them together in the same room?
Just sayin'.
So is a wedgie. So is an ag-ag and a noogie in a left-right deadly combination.
Meh.
Tell Jim Robinson that he is wrong about you, don’t tell me and the hundreds or thousands that merely believe that his personal observation of your posting history, is correct.
LOL! :)
No.
What part of waterboarding inflicts “pain”?
