An Oklahoma inmate whose execution was halted Tuesday because the delivery of a new drug combination was botched died of a heart attack, the head of the state Department of Corrections said.
Director Robert Patton said inmate Clayton Lockett died Tuesday after all three drugs were administered.
Patton halted Lockett's execution about 20 minutes after the first drug was administered. He said there had been vein failure.
The execution began at 6:23 p.m. when officials began administering the first drug, and a doctor declared Lockett to be unconscious at 6:33 p.m.
About three minutes later, though, Lockett began breathing heavily, writhing on the gurney, clenching his teeth and straining to lift his head off the pillow. After about three minutes, a doctor lifted the sheet that was covering Lockett to examine the injection site.
"There was some concern at that time that the drugs were not having that (desired) effect, and the doctor observed the line at that time and determined the line had blown," Patton said at a news conference afterward, referring to Lockett's vein rupturing.

Ever listen to Ken’s radio show? He played the toilet flush audio when there was an execution the day before. As a Memorial.
Beheading works for me, too. Bring back the guillotine...it’s almost impossible to botch that.
Uh, I never claimed to be a genius but isn’t the whole purpose of an execution to kill somebody? Does it really matter how they get dead?
Yes. Just bring back hanging.
So Constitutional, they even used to conduct hangings right on the US Capitol grounds.
A fitting memorial, IMHO. LOL!
Bring back the firing squad. I do think that the death penalty should be reserved for very special folks though - and we know who those are!
Well that's total BS...
Just saying...!!!
G-d wanted him dead one way or other - Hell awaits.
Works for me.
SNL did a Gary Gilmore thing that was one of the funniest things I ever saw.
IIRC it was a Christmas Carol about him.
.
There was another botched execution at BIG MAC. A local man committed two murders over in the edge of Oklahoma.
He was sentenced to die, but they completely forgot about him till several months after the execution date had passed. So they sentenced him to Life. His victims got no such reprieve.
Was his name Eduar de Lacroix, and was there a mouse named Mr. Jingles involved? Or perhaps a Law Abiding Citizen hacked into the server and put something in more .deliberative?
i was a child when he was executed... did he choose his method of execution? i seem to recall that he chose firing squad over hanging--which seemed to me to be the more efficient of the two...
I dig the simplicity and reliable operation, but the engineer in me thinks the design needs an update. Maybe something with electromagnets or high-powered lasers.
He’s lucky I wasn’t in charge of his fate. I have a real nasty side.
Yes.
A government is trying to do it.
Whatever.............
So he killed the girl but let the raped girl and burnt survive? This guy and his two pals should have been executed just for blatant stupidity!
