Rand Paul Crafting New Alliances With Romney’s 2012 Team

BOSTON (AP) — Fighting to move beyond his father’s shadow, Sen. Rand Paul is crafting new alliances with the Republican Party establishment during a Northeast tour that began Friday in Boston.

The 51-year-old Kentucky Republican, son of libertarian hero and former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, headlined an afternoon luncheon hosted by top lieutenants of former presidential nominee Mitt Romney — a private meeting that comes as Paul weighs a 2016 presidential bid of his own. To succeed in a national campaign, however, those close to Paul acknowledge that he must broaden his appeal beyond the Tea Party and libertarian-minded activists who rallied behind his father’s long-shot presidential runs.

Paul offered a unique blend of what he called “libertarian-ish” politics while addressing Harvard University’s Institute of Politics Friday afternoon.

“The Republican Party will adapt, evolve or die,” Paul declared.

He railed against perceived civil liberties abuses in the Obama administration, while suggesting his party should focus less attention on social issues. He also said the GOP should abandon calls to deport millions of immigrants and offered that armed school officials might help prevent further mass shootings.

But more than what he said publicly, Paul’s private actions on Friday marked a new step in his push to strengthen his political standing.

The freshman senator attended the luncheon at the private-equity firm Solamere Capital, a Boston-area company led by Romney’s his former national finance chairman, Spencer Zwick, and Romney’s oldest son, Tagg. Romney himself serves as a senior adviser to the firm and has an office there, although he did not attend the gathering.

Zwick arranged a private audience of just a dozen key members of Romney’s inner circle, including senior advisers Beth Myers, Bob White and Ron Kaufman.

“By removing the Federal Government, we will place our faith in the hands of the individual.

As a result, virtually all our social issues will be decided at the local level.”

Put down the Bong and step slowly away from the keyboard.

These days... you may be right. The article underscores how vapid and without direction he is. Yeah, there is some overlap there.

The people are the same and the agenda is the same. It is ALL overlap.

We are 2 years out from an election and already Rand id moderating. Take a guess what Rand will be saying come Nov2016 with the Romney money and Romney campaign machine behind him. I would wager the farm, dog and child that ir sounds an awful lot like Romney.

I would also bet everything that a number of Freepers will be screaming that we have to vote for him no matter what and that we should have hashed it all out 2 years ago...which is now.

Just like last time and every election prior. you would think people would stop licking the frozen flag pole once the tongue sticks a couple times.

While I agree with your position, given the current political environment an authoritative conservative message is a non starter.

It is in fact a “Leap of Faith”.

I would vote for Ted Cruz in a heartbeat, but I think Rand Paul has a better chance at winning.

Ted doesn’t play politics. Rand is going to run and is playing the game.

You and I both know that Cruz is a better representation of the conservative message, but as he preaches to the choir, Paul is looking to capture the discontent and the votes from the middle.

Times have changed.

I’ve not forgotten how the 2012 convention chicanery either.

IMO, the GOP is a write off. Many conservatives are still dedicated to one more frontal assault on the works however.

“If you want the C.O.,
I know where he is, I know where he is, I know where he is.
If you want the C.O., I know where he is
He is down in a deep dug-out,
I’ve seen him, I’ve seen him, down in a deep dug-out,
I’ve seen him, I’ve seen him, down in a deep dug-out.

If you want to find the old battalion,
I know where they are, I know where they are, I know where they are
If you want to find the old battalion, I know where they are,
They’re hanging on the old barbed wire,
I’ve seen ‘em, I’ve seen ‘em, hanging on the old barbed wire.
I’ve seen ‘em, I’ve seen ‘em, hanging on the old barbed wire.”

There are MAYBE 5 Republicans at the national level worth a vote. Anyone that votes the rest in may as well just vote a straight ticket. Literally. Because the rest are siding with the dems on EVERY major issue.

The facts are there. And spending months campaigning hard against conservative positions, then voting for them knowing they will lose does not make one worth a vote.

Rand Paul is a moron with zero, zip, nadda chance of being elected nationally.

For every liberal vote he gains with queer marriage, abortion, amnesty, and dope, he would lose 2-3 conservative votes.

Guess what...those liberal dope heads aren’t going to vote for smaller government or cutting taxes.

He couldn’t carry a single state.

It isn’t really the dems taking the country down, though they do their best. They are what they are. It’s the Republicans destroying it. They had one job to do. Stop Dems from putting their wheels in motion. They not only failed, but help to push the car. So who is worse? The ideologue or the traitor to the cause?

And they have so many little helpers helping them do it.

Republicans can’t do much with Hairy Greed controlling the Senate and owebama in the white hut.

All they can do is shut down government and wind up slaughtered in the next election.

There you go again, Rand. How does anyone trust this man who thinks he’s entitled to the Presidency?

Losing isn’t much of a plan.

If we want to turn things around and stop owebama from imposing his agenda, we have to take the Senate in Nov.

And winning with our victory being the Dem agenda is?

Does it matter if a Dem or a Pub does the same action? Is amnesty more evil if a dem votes for it? Is the homofication thing more acceptable if the GOP OKs it?

As a result, virtually all our social issues will be decided at the local level.

Rand Paul is running for the presidency, which locality decides federal policy and law on abortion in the military, in federal employment, and in immigration?

Who said anything about amnesty or adopting the lib agenda?

Winning in Nov doesn’t include those things.

I disagree.

Liberal/progressive politics is all about the “Governmental” acceptance, promotion and protection of groups. By the force of Government.

I don’t belong to any of their groups.

Sadly, I am still defined politically as being part of a “Group”. A Conservative Christian.

This group has no chance getting elected given the nature of the media and its zombie followers. We are excluded from even having our message heard.

To be perfectly clear, we need to be perfectly vague.

We need to be “undefinable”.

As soon as the media can define us, they will attempt to destroy us.
