LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million in response to the racist remarks he allegedly made in a recorded audio clip.
Silver spoke to the press at 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will do everything in my power to force the sale of the Clippers.
The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage, Silver said. I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.

Did the NBA violate any anti trust laws here?
That’s the other shoe to drop..... probably come out at some point that she used to be a dude.
How many are crazy liberals?
Yes, I hope he sues. I rarely root for a liberal or a personal injury lawyer, AND it is apparent this old guy is a racist, BUT this shakedown job is BS.
Sue Silver, sue the League, sue TMZ, sue the girl, put them ALL on trial.
Utterly ridiculous. And by the way, I don’t like basketball. I just want people to be free to be stupid.
WHERE IS THE ACLU????
Ok, mincing words, yes, the jury can decide pretty much anything, whether relevant or not relevant. Yes, in a murder trial, they can come back with a verdict that hot-air balloons rise. Then the Judge can step in to fix, even to the extent of vacating it for a new trial.
Quite a few in DC, NY, LA, Miami, Chicago
More importantly the sponsors cater to blacks also. In particular NIKE, Addidas, Reebok
If you know of specific California or federal law to the contrary, please post it. "Expectation of privacy" is a term from Fourth Amendment law.
They might be able to ding him under a private contract, which alas can be as draconian as it pleases.
On the other hand he could go bankrupt and then nyaa nyaa.
That is one city. Go to LA, NY, DC, Chicago, Miami.
And do not forget the sponsors such as Nike, Addidas, Reebok and what audience they cater to
He explicitly had no problem with her having sex with the black, young studs of the NBA, NFL, or her favorite nightclub.
He just didn’t want it public. He encouraged her to engage in these dalliances at home, in private.
This has more to do with an old fool not wanting to look like an old fool, and less to do with bigotry.
Her being seen with oversexed young studs embarrassed and humiliated him. In his mind, it made him look like he couldn’t handle his young girlfriend. He comes across as a cuckolded old fool.
I think that was his beef. He’s a wealthy billionaire, master of the universe, and he didn’t want it to look like his girl slutted around, even if she did actually slut around.
That’s my opinion.
Gotta take him to civil court to enforce a contract. That could take years to work its self out. THis guy should go to the games and tell the NBA to go dunk itself.
Absolutely not true. You cannot secretly record a conversation. Both parties must give consent. Ask any divorce attorney or PI.
you also cannot place recording equipment on a PC without consent. Again, wiretapping. A friend went through this in Texas. He caught his wife cheating via a spy program that recorded her instant messages. The evidence was not admissible.
If the NBA tries to go to court with a secret recording they will lose in a big way. They have nothing but an illegal recording. Without that, they got nuthin.
The ACLU is split; some are philosophical libertarians and others are screaming liberals. He won’t get any sympathy out of the screaming liberals.
Ultimately it seems to me this is a private affair under private contracts and they can have whatever weird rules they please, so the libertarians won’t be helping him either.
This is the thing though....there’s a strong subculture in black communities. It comes with it’s own fashion, slang, non-verbal mannerisms, dialect/accent, etc. - if you’re not comfortable around that, or find it difficult to identify with, why would you want them in your private suite at the game? How many black people don’t like having whites around?
Freedom of association - I think that’s all he wanted. He didn’t care what else she did with them - just didn’t want them in his suite. That said, good luck getting any tolerance for it.
I think he’s just a rich old stick-in-the-mud who wants to be around the people he wants. He’s not calling for segregation or something historically similar...even though it is racist, it’s being way overblown.
Is it worth it however... he’d only get hooted at.
Anyhow, it’s rich irony when a white exclusivist is greeted with evidence that actually bears up his story. If I were a white exclusivist, I’d let them go ahead and ostracize me, then I’d sing an opera to the world.
Nothing but crickets and sponsors didn't pull out when Oprah said whites needed to die off before racism could end.
Paging Mr. Marion Barry .... paging Mayor Barry
Conspiracy to deny a business owner access to the lucrative arena ticket sales and TV Broadcast fees.
Clear cut.
It’s evil.
The man owns the team, and probably the facilities. They cannot ban him from his own buildings. They may be able to ban him from the games. I do not know.
This idea of taking a person’s private conversations and trying to bring the force of law down on him because what he says is distasteful is not only wrong, I cannot believe it is legal.
It is, IMHO, wholly unbconstitutional.
I heard Rush opine today something no one is talking about.
Apparently, Magic Johnson has been seeking to buy the Clippers from Sterling before this. He also knows Sterling’s trist. Rush opined that the whole thing was a set up between Johnson and this girl to sucker Sterling into these types of comments (particularly involving Johnson himself) as a way to devalue the franchise so Johnson could get a really good deal on it.
That sounds believable to me, though we have no way of knowing right no if that that is what went down.
