The Malaysian government confirmed Tuesday that officials investigating the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 were looking into an Australian company's claim to have located aircraft wreckage on the sea floor in the northern Bay of Bengal -- thousands of miles from the search area scanned meticulously for weeks to the south.
Australian land and sea survey company GeoResonance said in a statement sent Tuesday to CBS News that it had discovered materials "believe to be the wreckage of a commercial airliner" about 100 miles south of Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal using proprietary technology which scans vast areas for specific metals or minerals.
The company's technology is often used to help clients find mineral deposits for mining, but GeoResonance also has participated in the hunt for old warships or aircraft on the ocean floor.
"During the search for MH370, GeoResonance searched for chemical elements that make up a Boeing 777: aluminum, titanium, copper, steel alloys, jet fuel residue, and several other substances. The aim was to find a location where all those elements were present," said the company in the written statement.
Scanning "multispectral images" taken from the air on March 10 -- two days after Flight 370 went missing -- GeoResonance says it found "an anomaly in one place in the Bay of Bengal" where many of those relevant materials were detected in significant amounts, and in a pattern which matched the approximate layout of a large aircraft.

So... based on the path between takeoff point and the new ‘point of interest’ found by GeoResonance, just where was the plane headed ?
Nearest airport would be Barisal.
Second choice could have been Calcutta Netaji Subhas Chandra (CCU).
This point of interest seems much more likley than the supposed route to the SW.
My opinion from early on was that the plane headed toward the north and that some country shot it out of the sky as a threat.
They would never have reported that...
Other countries would have looked the other way out of sympathy for such a tough decision.
There’s a piece of me that still would not be surprised to learn that was the actual final fate of 9/11 Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.

Heading SW was a flight into nowhere. Just never made sense IMO.
That alleged find should be relatively easy to check out compared with searching that area off Australia.
However, jurisdictional problems could arise in the new area.

So, the north always seemed a better conclusion to me.
Per the article, the image of the possible wreckage is about 100 miles south of Bangladesh. That’s not the far offshore. I don’t know anything about the prevailing sea currents in that area but its curious that evidently nobody (e.g., fishermen or cargo ships) ever reported seeing any debris in that area nor did anything wash up on local shores. At least there were no such reports that I’m aware of.

On 9/11, the husband of a gal I worked with was an officer at Offutt Airforce base here. I don’t remember if it was still called “Strategic Air Command” center. Anyway, while the horror drama was playing out, before the flight 93 situation was resolved, she had spoken to her husband on the phone, and told us that there was talk of shooting down the missing plane, if it was located. So your theory is not out of the realm of possibility.
We shot an Iranian airliner out of the sky and it was reported. We reported it.
The Soviets shot a Korean airliner down and it was reported.
Sympathy from other countries, my foot.
If that’s the plane then it didn’t crash but was ditched safely into the waters by the pilot intact and sunk intact —
The Iranians hate us and this is still a time when we are “at war” with Iran. At the time, there was discussion whether the Iranians were intentionally running that plane directly at our naval vessel.
I don’t remember the details of the Korean airliner....got off course, didn’t it? I think it was not trying to hide it’s identification, it was communicating, and it was just slightly off course.
The Malaysians are in a real pickle now — do they check this out and give credence to the report or stand by the report they gave to the families yesterday:
“The Malaysian delegation also published slides showing the last known “handshakes” between the aircraft and an Inmarsat satellite over the Indian Ocean.
“The sixth and final handshake took place at 8:11 a.m. Malaysian time. According to these Inmarsat data points, in relation to the Inmarsat satellite, Flight 370 was far south of where it should have been if it had been on its planned route to Beijing.”

Perhaps they will sing a new song:
One flew north, One flew south, and One flew into the cuckoos mouth.
They may find some WWII wrecks, maybe sunken treasure. Silver lining?
