That phrasing from the article is a patently offensive smear of the worst sort. Senator Joseph McCarthy was a Patriot, the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery in WWII and a fierce opponent of communism. As it turns out, in spite of the lies spread by Edward (real name Egbert) R. Murrow and Fred Friendly (real name Ferdinand Wachenheimer), McCarthy was right.
Being called a McCarthyite ought to be among the highest forms of praise and not used as a pejorative. He was thoroughly American and loved the country he served so well.
