U.S. can't let Cliven Bundy win his range war: Nevada cattle rancher is not a man of principle...
The Los Angeles Times ^ | April 23, 2014 | The Editorial Board

Posted on 04/23/2014 11:14:29 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy is being portrayed by some as a man of principle, an iconoclast who should be admired for his willingness to stand up to the federal government. But in fact he's a petty scofflaw who seems to think that he has the right to pick and choose which rules must be obeyed.

Bundy is the cattleman who grazes his herd on federal land operated by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, but unlike more than 15,000 other ranchers, he refuses to pay the associated grazing fees. After 20 years of disagreements and court battles, the U.S. government began rounding up his cattle this month. The rancher and a group of armed supporters confronted the federal authorities, leading to a standoff; the authorities withdrew.

Bundy justifies his stingy and illegal behavior with a variety of claims. One is that this is a states' rights issue and that he doesn't "recognize" the federal government. Another is that his family grazed the land long before it came under the jurisdiction of the BLM.

Actually, more than 70% of the land in Nevada is federally owned, including the land in question; the state Constitution recognized that ownership years before Bundy's ancestors arrived, despite his assertion otherwise. (Various reports also have cast serious doubt on whether his family was grazing cattle on the land as long ago as he claims.) For that matter, if prior use of land were all that was needed to avoid paying a landlord, the land would revert back not to Bundy but to the control of Native Americans, who were on the Nevada land long before any white settlement of the area...

He didn’t pay the state or the county. He paid the BLM until he decided not to.

The federal government does own the land and has since long before Bundy’s ancestors began grazing cattle.

So what? The issues are:

1. Why should the federal government own 85% of Nevada?

2. Why is a federal, land-management agency executing a military-style operation upon American citizens?

#2 just breaks liberal minds: I was ‘politely discussing’ this with a certain liberal last week, and I said something along those lines, except far more graphically. Something like, ‘So the government should taze the kids of people who have speeding tickets?’

The response was, ‘Well he broke the laaaawwwwww!’

My response: ‘So if I double park, the government has the right to confiscate my car, sell it off to the highest bidder, keep the money, and send a paramilitary force to my house if I object?’

His response: ‘But he broke the laaaawwww!’

I thought I had read that Mr. Bundy had been paying money to the State of Nevada for permits for the grazing I could be wrong.

You should quote him when he whines about illegals being deported or murderers on death row being executed ... “Well, they broke the laaaawwwwww!”

I’m sure you did read it. The erroneous reports have been numerous.

My understanding, he has been paying the county the grazing fees.
He wasn’t required to pay Fed fees until after Tortoise was declared endangered and the fee was for unspecified damages and his herd size was reduced. The fines seem punitive and aggregious and outside the boundaries of the US Constitution. BLM wasn’t around in 1870, but the Fed did keep the land unless they sold it off. Nevada never got sold for the most part.
But hey, the gov’t body, especially this one, is always right. Must not fight the gov’t or they will make an example of you. Think one of the czars was caught on tape saying you make an example like the Romans did - heads on a stake - to keep the rest in line. And he was talking about us....

“...he’s a petty scofflaw who seems to think that he has the right to pick and choose which rules must be obeyed...”
************************************************

Why should he be any different than you filthy Harry, or all the other people in Washington DC, and all the illegal aliens? Ignoring the laws is already an epidemic, and folks like Filthy Harry are the ones that started it.

Unfortunately, you’re all kinds of confused.

No, he hasn’t been paying Clark County. The county refused his offer to do so because the county recognizes federal ownership of the land.

Bundy paid grazing fees (not punitive damages) for decades to the BLM, as did the other ranchers, before the tortoise came into the picture.

Oh, but it was fine back then to have consciousness objectors in government when fighting Vietnamese or Iraqis...

but when it comes to murdering Americans with gangsters like Obama who have no use of nor care of real officiality except to make things up... Consciousness objectors and Bundys be gone. Protests now are illegal.

“...he doesn’t “recognize” the federal government...”

This is unmitigated crap. Bundy recognizes the government. He just doesn’t acknowledge their authority over the land he’s using. To say he outright doesn’t “recognize the government” is a transparent attempt to lump him into various kook/fringe groups, or the “sovereign citizen” movement.

Consciousness for a tortoise not for the griefs of Bundy... indeed, this is what the hypocrisy has come to.

I object to consciousness between the hours of 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM, unless I am being paid an offensive amount of money to fix someone else’s computer-related stupidity. In which case, I object to consciousness when said stupidity has been eradicated.

:D

Indeed. I was just refering that the word of “consciousness objector activism” within government working circles is now not an option for liberals - now that said government working circles are compelled/brainwashed into murdering Americans under fickle abused words like “court of law” or “domestic terrorists”.

The end is near.
