Ukraine rebels brace for new assault as US troops head to region

Slavyansk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Pro-Kremlin rebels in Ukraine braced Wednesday for a renewed military offensive by Kiev as US troops headed to region in a show of force after Washington again warned Moscow over the escalating crisis.

The United States said it plans to deploy 600 troops to Poland and the Baltic states to "reassure our allies and partners" after threatening Russia with more sanctions.

Ukraine's acting president Oleksandr Turchynov late Tuesday ordered a new "anti-terrorist" operation against separatists holding a string of eastern towns after the discovery of two "brutally tortured" bodies.

One of the dead was a local politician from Turchynov's party who was kidnapped nearly a week ago, the leader said, blaming his death on the rebels.

Kiev's offensive threatens to sound the final death knell for an already tattered agreement struck last week in Geneva between Ukraine, Russia and the West to ease the crisis, which some fear could tip the country into civil war.

"Security agencies are working to liquidate all the groups currently operating in Kramatorsk, Slavyansk and the other towns in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions," said Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Yarema, according to the Interfax Ukraine news agency.

A handful of rebels wearing camouflage gear and ski masks but with no apparent weapons stood outside the barricaded town hall they are occupying.

In front of the building were displayed three photos of militants who were killed in a weekend attack on a roadblock the separatists have blamed on pro-Kiev ultra-nationalists.

600 troops to Poland and Estonia. Mere theatrics and dithering by Obama. Putin will not be impressed or deterred.

Damned coup? Really? That’s a bit of pro-Russian propaganda.

The move by Russia started long ago and had almost succeeded in emplacing an operable puppet government. A popular overthrowing of that government does not qualify as a coup.

Theatrics or not, our ‘Dear Reader’ is playing a very dangerous game.

A game that only a mature experienced adult with an understanding of foreign policy should engage in.

There are far too many nutcases with their fingers nervously twitching over nuclear buttons to play this game of Truth or Dare.

He must have a war somewhere in the world in order to complete or continue (3rd term?) his assigned mission.

People my age can remember the sending of “advisors” to Viet Nam in the early 60’s.

Guess what became of that?????????????????

Right! You guessed it!

Its pretty much standard procedure with marxists. They always have an outside enemy threatening so the people at home don’t take their anger out on them.

It’s way to soon to say this is Russia’s Vietnam. It may be Russia’s “Slovinia,” “Bosnia/Croatia,” and “Kosovo,” though.

I was a little astounded when Poland told the Maidan, “accept the negotiated truce, or die.” Poland wasn’t threatening THEY’D interfere, just saying that Yanukovich’s forces would kill them, but still... it seemed to serve Yanukovich, and I couldn’t figure that out.

Turns out that many of the thugs now over-running Kiev believe that they should seize much of Poland. Whatever public purpose these forces have, their real purpose may be to keep Poland on board with the EU/US-led junta in Kiev.

Comment on Orwell’s 1984. Not my words, but they pretty much sum up what you said.

“The objective is not to win the war, but to maintain a constant state of war in order to keep its citizens under control. When it is at war with Eastasia, the government declares that it has always been at war with Eastasia, that its people are an eternally hated enemy that must be destroyed. When the sides change, the same thing is said about Eurasia. It is considered every patriotic citizen’s duty to believe both statements are true.”

The Vietnam stigma needs some informed perspective.

War is about having the will to fight and win.
Peace also, is about having the will to fight and win.

If the country does not maintain the will and ability to fight and win, there is no basis to expect positive results.

In Vietnam Johnson never employed strategies or tactics designed to WIN the war. We weren’t allowed to go after the true military targets, except on rare occasions approved by Washington.

600?

I don’t care if they are SEAL’s, 600 won’t do much in the face of a real assault.
