In their excellent book, The Year Without Summer: 1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History, William and Nicholas Klingaman relate the history, causes, and effects of the record cold that gripped the northern hemisphere in 1816. For most in America, Europe, and Asia, the winter of 1815-1816 was the coldest in living memory. What followed in the spring and summer of that year was equally disastrous. It was an entire year of cold rains, crop failures, hunger, and economic collapse.
There were multiple causes for the extreme weather of 1816, but all of them were natural, not man-made. Chief among them, according to the Klingamans, was the massive eruption of Tamboro in present-day Indonesia. The force of the explosion was ten times greater than that of Krakatoa, which took place in 1883. Heightened volcanic activity sent ash particles into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight and disrupting the northern hemispheric jet stream. One after another, polar vortexes dropped south, not just in the winter, but throughout 1816, and to a lesser extent for years afterward.
My prediction of a “year without summer” is based partly on the record of 1816 and other years of increased volcanic activity. Like 1815, 2013 saw significant volcanic activity, with major eruptions in Indonesia, Alaska, Italy, Argentina, and Japan. It was inevitable that this "particularly eventful year" of volcanic activity would be followed by a cold winter,

Here in VA Beach it was 49 on Easter with 35-45 MPH winds all day that made it feel like the 30’s. I want some spring too.
Oh, Pfffsh! It’s 97 today. I got yer Summer right here.
I’m a big fan of Joe’s, but I wish he’d write that down. Writing stuff down is a lost art.
I thought only Aquanet hairspray caused global cooling. I just can’t keep track of the calamities anymore.
I'd add "....while mocking the climate deniers for pointing out the same things."
Excellent examples of projection.
1977 Dallas Texas, the hottest summer I ever experienced. Over 40 days of +100. Many elderly died, afterwards, Pres Carter tried to give them Air Conditioners, but it was already too late, they were dead.
“suppress the primate sector” W T F ?
Yeah, I’m all for skipping summer! (SFL)
From the authors link - In 2013, erupting volcanoes included Italy's Mount Etna, Alaska's Mount Pavlof, Indonesia's Mount Sinabung, Argentina's Volcán Copahue, and a new island emerging off the coast of Nishinoshima, Japan.
He is stating that volcanic activity in 2013 caused the cold winter in US Midwest and East. And implies that continued activity will cause a cold summer. The solar sunspot trend has been down the past two cycles. Cycle 23 peaked about 70% as strong as cycle 22. Cycle 24 has peaked about 55 to 60 % as strong as cycle 23. So the solar trend is down for the past 20 years. There has been historical evidence that states volcanic activity during down solar trends can occur during the mini-ice ages.
The question is whether the current weak solar peak activity will be enough to stop the 20 year decline in solar activity. There is no way it can do that while volcanic activity is higher then normal. The solar peak is not strong enough. My guess is a summer similar to last year but slightly cooler.
There is a monkey wrench however in the works that is way beyond the scope of this article. That could lead to more rain and much colder temps.
NO NO it is nothing like the “Year without a Summer”
Folks starved to death and froze in their homes that year. It snowed in July in New England.
And it’s not summer until June (unless you go by the old calendar and it’s May 1)
Oddly enough, the next year 1817, the British expedition that was looking for the Northwest Passage sailed ice free almost all the way through the passage, and turned back because of a mirage that made things look like a mountain range blocked their way (or they were afraid that the ice would trap them eventually).
Weather is barely predicable at best.
The Northeast was cool and rainy.
It was 70 in Richmond...really nice!
