IIRC, they gave out 20 Congressional Medals of Honor to the soldiers who carried out the Wounded Knee Massacre.
I wasn’t tuned in at that point. I honestly didn’t follow it as much as I should have. How do you give those types of awards to people who are firing on their own fellow citizens?
Even if the job needs to be done, it’s just unseemly to reward someone for killing (in effect) their brother and sisters.
If someone tried to give me an award for that kind of thing I’d tell them to shove it.
I’m the type of guy who would have to be very certain the law enforcement effort was pure as the driven snow before I would take part.
