Feds: USPS worker takes disability, goes fishing ( Alaska )
Your Alaska Link News ^ | Apr 18, 2014

A former U.S. Postal Service employee in Anchorage was arraigned Friday on charges he accepted at least $334,000 in disability and worker's comp payments while he spent his summers fishing.

The U.S. attorney's office says in a Friday release that 56-year-old Amacio Zamora Agcaoili Jr. was indicted by a federal grand jury on 18 counts, including theft of government funds.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Yvonne Lamoureux also claims Agcaoli lied about not working when he was paid for preparing tax returns and immigration paperwork.

Authorities also claim he failed to tell the Social Security Administration about his worker's comp payments, to which he wasn't entitled.

They claim every summer between 2009 and 2013, he went dipnetting and fishing on multiple occasions despite being on disability.

Some years ago we bought some hastas from a neighborhood nursery. The woman owner picked up a dozen heavy plants and put thme on a cart then dragged them over to my car. Chatting on the way she told us she worked for the USPS, but she was currently on disability.

Only 5 years between claiming the disability ,
and being found out to be a false claim

Welcome to Government run healthcare, where it take 5 years to determine fraud !!

No. Claiming to be too disabled to work and then going fishing while collecting disability checks is the problem here.

Depends on the disability. If it involves strenuous exertion of the upper body and back, it probably does.

I'm sure it doesn't preclude riding in a boat, and watching someone else do the work.

Actually, if one is living in Alaska and not fishing, why are they living?

I presently play ice-hockey with a State Sheriff / Highway Patrol who is on disability. Hurt his lower back a year or two ago while on duty.

Well, I think there is a huge difference between recreational fishing, which is someone could do even from a wheelchair, and commercial fishing using boats and nets...

In fact, Alabama gives free recreational fishing licenses to disabled vets.

I did not ever claim disability because I did not want questions like this, although I could have.

Not all forms of disability involve a broken back, or something like that, and not all are continuous (but most of the time). I have days where I could, fish, ride the motorcycle, etc., but not all that many.

"Depends on the disability."

Yes, and the article has nothing to say about that. If he was on disability due to stress (i.e. he was about to go postal); then fishing might have been the prescribed cure.

He's also accused of earning money from other work -- that might be the thing they've got him on.

It's never a good idea to judge anyone solely on the basis of media reports.

No. CLAIMING disability to go DIPNET fishing. Dipnet fishing is strenuous and dangerous. Sometimes the fish can weigh over 60 pounds. Some disability...

Some people seem to think that if you back pain or some other injury you can’t do anything and if you get any compensation for it you should be lying in bed 24/7.
