The Bureau of Land Management is clearly having an image problem. As the outrage over its intimidating show of force during last weeks showdown at the Bundy Ranch in Nevada proved, the federal agency is now caught up in a controversy originating in Wyoming.
According to recent reports, agents herded a large group of wild horses in the state before ceding control of the majestic animals to state authorities. At that point, Wyoming officials sold them off to a slaughterhouse in Canada.
Obviously, this development outraged countless advocates already incensed by accusations that BLM officers gunned down multiple cows at the Bundy Ranch.
Paula Todd King, a wild horse advocate with Colorados Cloud Foundation, said it would have taken very little to do this in a more effective way so that horses are not just sent off to slaughter indiscriminately.
Though wild horses, which have roamed throughout the American West for hundreds of years, are protected by federal law, the BLM contends these animals do not qualify for such protection. Instead, agency spokesperson Sarah Beckwith contends they are strays descended from rodeo horses from four decades ago.
King, however, wondered how such a distinction is made.
How long does a horse have to live wild and free before its considered wild? she asked.

I’ve had months of months of hearing about this from my sister. There are lots of other things that ought to break the BLM, and even break them harder even with the DC libs doubling down on taking their back.
Things are getting crazy. These BLM guys are just practicing. Outraging and purposely trying to upset the locals. Trying to show folks who’s boss.
That would be “lots of other things” with a cumulative effect along with this subject matter. The desert tortoise double-dealing included.
So more is known about the origins of specific wild horses than.. well.
Hmmm.
These are the kind of people that make government something freedom-loving people want to overthrow more than anything else.
Urban-know-it-alls !
Who gets the money from their sale? Wyoming officials?
How did this continent survive before the Spaniards brought horses to it? Can we survive without them, or with only the number that the wild range acreage available can support? And what will have to give way, so that every wild horse born will be able to live to a ripe, old horse age? Judging by my experience with farm work horses some 50 to 60 years ago, that may be about 30 years. Members of the Wild Horse Old-timers Association (WHOA) may be able to provide a more accurate estimate.
My little BLM guy, who is likely to live out his days being ridden 5-6 times a year whether he needs it or not. The white mark on his neck is the freeze brand. He gets scared riding in an arena, but is quite happy to go out on a trail with the big horses:
Another agency gone rogue!
“How long does a horse have to live wild and free before its considered wild? she asked.”
Yes, ‘n’ how many years can some horses exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
Yes, ‘n’ how many deaths will it take till we know
That too many horses have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind,
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
(That was a well-phrased question — profound even. I thought it deserved a little recognition; so I stole some lines, and modified them a bit.)

Feral horses. Their ancestors, brought in by the Spanish escaped when the Pueblos revolted in 1680.
Happy that you have a BLM mustang. Hope your friends and neighbors do too. Wish I could have one, but I live in an apartment where cats are barely tolerated.
I belong to and support wild horse preservation efforts. This organization does manage to protect at least some of these lovely and endangered animals: http://wildhorsepreservation.org
Looks to me like the state governments and or the people within the state have the constitutional right to make these decisions, not the feds. The land needs to be returned to the states and the BLM dissolved.
Are the horses NOT qualified because they didn’t or couldn’t fill out the forms properly?
With the various Fed agencies, filling out the form seems to be of critical important.
Just curious.
Illegal alien horses???
Doing the jobs American horses won't do.
Here is a video of the BLM guys "kicking the cat" (wild mustangs/little dinosaurs) after failing at the Bundy Ranch.
