As Mein Kampf makes clear, Hitler sought to unite all the people of German speech and culture into one state, or Reich, preferably by peaceful negotiation, otherwise by war and conquest...
Todays drift toward war with Russia seems like a replay of the past. Putin is a Russian nationalist, who believes in a strong Stalinist state. His goal is to reverse the events of 1989the end of the Soviet state and dissolution of its enormous empire...
...to wield against the various weak states that were part of the U.S.S.R... All have ethnic Russian minorities, who speak the language, boast of their superior Russian culture and claim to have been relegated to second-class citizenship. Putin can rely on these minorities to agitate for Russian intervention whenever he wantsmost importantly in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. His successful annexation of Crimea is greatly encouraging to his long-term plans, and its clear hell use everything in his power, including military force, to reconstruct his empire.

Without new territory to exploit the bureaucrats in Brussels know their failed nanny state economies will soon run out of other people's money to prop them up, and start to crumble. This process has already begun in places like Greece, Spain, Italy, and France.
It is ironic to see American conservatives cheerleading Europe's expansion efforts in this regard, rather than support the nascent European nationalist movements in Britain, France, Germany, who are trying to stop it.
I have no respect for the West. I disagree with Paul Johnson. I would hardly consider second rate a country that is rebuilding itself and flexing its muscles in support of its national interests. Russia is behaving as a great power should.
President Putin’s goal is less to reconstruct the USSR than to restore Russia’s influence over its Near Abroad and to keep the West come from coming ever closer to Russia’s borders. No Russian leader would act any differently. And given that Russia is the world’s largest country, this was all but inevitable. The Soviet collapse was always going to be a temporary state of affairs.
No - Putin is not Hitler. He is not seeking to conquer the world or to engage in a rash empire-building project. Russia simply neither has the will nor the means to accomplish the feat. What Russia can do is gain respect as an equal on the world stage - this fact is in evidence before us today in Geneva. In Ukraine above all, the use of force on the part of Russia is a measure of the very last resort.
Its easy to imagine the historical parallels; but then there are also historical differences. And Johnson’s provincialism keeps him from seeing what the latter are.
Hitler is a poor match. Putin is more along the lines of Bismark.
Hitler was a Leftist.
The only difference between fascism, communism, monarchy, etc. is the justification for total state control.
Understood,
but the left has perpetuated the idea that fascism is a “right wing” thing,
and that their precious communism couldn’t possibly be harmful in any way.
I’d like to see Texas and California retain English as the spoken language, keep American culture predominant and prevent the influence of illegals from ruining the states. The way things are going now, they may become breakaway states soon.
That does not make me Hitler.
More like another Stalin
vaudine
I would even go so far to suggest that it's more like the Rhineland or the Saar.
Never thought I’d see the day when I had more respect for a Russian leader than the ‘leader’ of the US.
You would go so far to suggest Moscow is more like Nagasaki.
As the father of two draft-age boys, I will encourage them to fight only on native soil. Never to go into a war following an idiot left-wing pResident.
We have our real enemies in Washington, not the Ukraine. Everyone who fought to defend our Constitution in the past did all for nought as those hard-won rights were stolen at the ballot box.
We now have a Socialist State. Everything Eugene Debs and the Socialist party of the 1920’s wanted, is now a fait accompli. The Fabian Socialists got what they wanted, now they are pushing us further left and the sheeple are buying it.
We just saw the government get away with ‘Free Speech Zones’! That is an outrage. There is one Free Speech Zone in the USA - it extends from the Atlantic seabord to the West Coast and includes Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and other US Territories.
What is left to fight for? The Ukraine?
I would rather we put Obama and Putin together in a cage-fight: a fight to the death. The winner keeps the Ukraine.
For the next war, the first sent into battle should also be the sons, daughters and blood relatives of the political class. Until Malia and Sasha march off to fight for Obama, my kids are not going anywhere. Rory Reid has some military age kids too I see...
The time is over for those b@stards to start wars and send our kids to the front. Let their kids be forced to the front first.
we need to concern ourselves with the crimes of our own little third world regime...let the Russians deal with themselves and their neighbors that want to be Russian.
Ummm. No.
On the ideological front, remember, Putin cut taxes and implemented a flat tax that sent the disastrous economy on a solid growth path. Now, the rich tourists abroad are the Russian monied class.
Just ask the folks in VERY EXPENSIVE Porto Fino, Italy who spends the most...
Yes. That is Ukraine, but it’s Putin who is Hitler. I understand now.
Putin is more like Peter the Great. Trying to modernize a backward country.
And Peter the Great, wasn’t a real nice guy. But he was no Hitler, neither.
Agreed.
God, I miss Ronald Reagan...
Ones Putinm is a straight tyrant the other one Obama, is a gay tyrant.
Pretty similar, yes.
Except the queer moslem has no pretense of a moral compass to hold him back.
